Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Sansa Fuze 4 GB Video MP3 Player (Black)

Customer Review: Excellent
Summary: 5 Stars

I use this to listen to internet recorded programs, some podcasts, and the FM radio. I don't use it for video so cannot comment on how it does with video files. I've used many mp3 players, including the older ipods, and sony mp3 players. I like the 'drag and drop' way of getting files onto the player, although you can use the supplied software and WMP to do your music management. I also like the memory expansion slot. If you configure the player as "MSC" you can drag/drop folders to it and see them to access files to play. I like that the 'wheel' is the volume control and a soft blue ring lights up when you use the navigation buttons and the wheel. The FM tuner in this is very sensitive, a plus if you like to hear FM stations. The size of the package fits the hand nicely. The rear of the unit is a rubbery material, and the front (black) is piano shiny black. Hold switch on the right side, headphone jack at the bottom right next to the data cable. Battery life is excellent, and it sounds very good on headphones, and has EQ settings for various types of file playback. I'm very pleased with this unit but i don't use it with any sort of 'synchronization' software, I just drag files onto it like I would a flash drive, so I cannot comment on how well it does with WMP and management software. The ipod remains the champ if you like that total package that auto downloads everything for you. I think the Fuze is very well done and for me it beats the ipod in how I use such a device.

update June 2009: Still like this player a lot. In MSC mode, it's truly drag and drop your files, no management software needed. Of additional note, the FM in this is better than the Sony mp3 Walkmans. I can hear stations on this with full clarity that the Sony only provides with significant distortion (because the signal is received so weakly). I still like this player a lot.

Customer Review: For audiobook listeners...fantastic!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just got my Fuze and it exceeds my expectations. Let me explain. I listen to audiobooks and music. I have never been able to find a player that allows me to remember my audiobook place (bookmark) after listening to music. Fuze let's me do this. When listening to a book, simply exit to main menu and you are given the option to resume when you return to your book. Awesome! And you will also automatically resume on the music track when you return there.

I have had had a Creative Zen V for the past couple of years, I actually bought a Sansa 260 back then but got rid of it. The Fuze is so much better.

As for the player itself - it feels robust with a lovely finish. How well it withstands scratches remains to be seen but I will most likely get a silicone cover. The controls are wonderful to the touch and scrolling through the menus is a breeze. The scroll wheel on the Fuze is a huge improvement on its predecessor.

The only thing I would suggest to discard are the headphones. Get yourself a decent pair as the those included are garbage. But then this goes for most brands of MP3 players. I use Sennheiser PX 100 which are great value at less than $40 on Amazon.

All in all, the Sansa Fuze is a great little player.

Several months on - I love it! This player has exceeded my expectations. Fantastic battery life by the way.

Still awesome! Never a problem and I turn this on several times a day. Battery life is still great. Would buy another in a heartbeat.

Still rocking! This has to be the best player ever!!!

Unbelievable! Considering the workout that this player gets - booted at least 12 times a day - I have no hesitation WHATSOEVER in recommending the Sansa Fuze to anyone.

Customer Review: Awesome product, awesome price.

Here's the only thing I don't like about it:
When you have an external memory card plugged in,
it does not take much when you move the player around
for the player to think that the memory has been taken out
and inserted again when it hasn't, which causes the player
to "refresh media" which can take 5 minutes or so if the sdhc
card has a lot of files on it. I actually glued mine in
which seems to have prevented this from happening.

Here are the things I do like about it:
I left it in my pocket and it was put though an entire
cycle of a washing machine, found at the bottom
of the washer, and it slowly came back to life after a few
days, and I'm still using it!

The battery lasts over 20 hours, it re-charges very fast, (especially
if you order the optional wall charger found here on amazon very cheap),
Navigation is quick. Solid metal construction, but not heavy.
It is a little smaller than a credit card, and 5/16" thick.

I recommend using windows media player and syncing your files, which
prevents you from adding the same songs twice. Make sure all of your
files have ID tags before you transfer them, or they will not be filed
properly and be hard to find and scattered in a different order on the player. You can also make playlists to keep files without ID tags in
the proper running order.
I also drag files to 'audio books' if I have files that are really
long (single files of entire radio shows for example) and contain many songs to keep them separate from the other single
song files which makes them easy to locate.

All in all, I am very satisfied with this player and have had it for
about 3 months now.

Customer Review: Excellent value in a small entertainment center
Summary: 5 Stars

The Sansa Fuze is more than just an MP3 player. It handles video, has an FM radio, can be used as a voice recorder, audio book player and photo viewer. In a pinch, you can also use it to store data.

The unit is extremely compact and very light (2.2 x 1.5 x 0.6 inches and 2.1 ounces according to Amazon). Manufacturing quality is high. The audio out the 3.5mm jack is surprisingly full and even more surprisingly loud. The 1.9" is a wonder. Much to my delight, I just watched a movie on it and didn't find the small screen to be a handicap, which frankly astonished me.

As supplied, the unit charges with the provided USB cable. Needless to say, external chargers are available as are composite video cables, auto chargers and a host of cases. The battery is not user replaceable. Sansa says you'll get 24 hours of audio and 5 hours of video. I haven't tested the unit to those extremes. One negative feature is that you cannot use the unit for audio or video playback when it is connected via the USB cable, so plan on charging it at night or whenever you're not planning on using the unit.

The Fuze accepts microSDHC cards which means you can expand its capacity by 4GB or more. I have successfully tested it with 16 GB microSDHC cards.

Sansa does a good job of resolving issues with the firmware. They also provide an easy-to-use converter for photos and video, though anyone familiar with the DivX and JPG formats can roll their own.

Overall, this is a very nice little unit. I actually bought it as a low cost feed for a console. Having used it now for several hours, I think I may buy another to carry with me. The Fuze is really great as a low profile entertainment center. Very cool gadget.

Customer Review: mac/ipod user LOVES this sansa fuze!!! :)
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a mac user, through and through. I didn't realize that by buying music from itunes and using ipods that they were compatible with each other... ONLY WITH EACH OTHER. My ipod got lost so i wanted a new mp3 player but was tired of getting ipods. I decided to look around and found that this mp3 player was the competition for the ipods. I decided to try it.... not realizing that it was for PC's (but still compatible with macs, as i found out later)!! I got it home and almost returned it until I found out a way to make it work for me. I converted all my songs to mp3's (all the songs I bought off of itunes were in m4a versions, incompatible with mp3's) which took FOREVER.. i also had to remove the protection on my already bought itunes music so i could USE that which I BOUGHT.

I have been working on this all evening but it's WORTH IT for this cute lil mp3 player. I've already filled it up with music and am about to buy an 8Gb card so i can put MORE music!

What I love MOSt about this mp3 player is the FM player. i love listening to the radio and there are times that I just want to hear a song w/o having to purchase it (unless I really like it). This gives me the option to listen to even MORE songs without spending money. LOVE IT.

a techy friend of mine (techy = technically savvy) told me there was some external adapter FM player for the ipods too... eh-- i'd rather have this mp3 player! SO CUTE, So good looking, Works amazing, love it through and through!

If you have PC, it's compatible and you won't have issues (unless you've bought itunes music too.. Then you have work ahead of you). but if you already have itunes music and you like ipods, why go to all the work. unless you want the FM PLAYER!! (love it)
