Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Sansa Fuze 4 GB Video MP3 Player (Black)

Customer Review: Sansa Fuze: Primarily For MP3s With Picture And Video Support Too
Summary: 4 Stars

THE GOOD:

* Supports a wide range of media in a small and inexpensive package
* Great sound quality
* Easy music transfer with multiple options
* Decent picture support on limited display
* Easy to use and intuitive menus
* Micro SDHC Card Slot

THE BAD:

* Proprietary charging port connection
* Frustrating video transfer experience
* Video display is average

OVERALL: The Sandisk Sansa Fuze is primarily an mp3/audio player. Photos and videos are nice throw ins for the money, but serious multimedia usage should be left to a more powerful device such as the Sansa View. My detailed usage based review follows:

SETUP: For music transfer, there is really nothing to do. As with my Clip, all I had to do was connect the device using the cable included with the device. My machine running Windows Vista had no problem recognizing the device. Windows Media Player even recognized the micro SD card with no formatting required.

For photos and video, I had to download the Sansa Media Converter software from the Sansa web site. The install process is easy enough, and in theory you are ready to go.

MUSIC TRANSFER: This is smooth and easy as with the previous Sansa players I have had. The Fuze supports both dragging and dropping of mp3 files to the device in Windows Explorer as you would to a flash drive. However it also works very well with Windows Media Player too. I prefer this method in order to create playlists. While the Fuze also works with Rhapsody, I don't really care for this software. The upshot is that you have a good ranger of options depending on your preferences.

PICTURE TRANSFER: It would be nice if this were also drag and drop and the Fuze had the ability to resize pictures on the fly. However, I was able to use Sansa Media Converter to import a number of .jpeg files and transfer them to my Fuze with no trouble.

VIDEO TRANSFER: I am glad that I did not buy this with watching videos as my primary intended use. I had numerous false starts with getting videos onto my device because the stated format supported in the product description is a little misleading. I had not done much with digital video prior to owning this device, and I was expecting mpeg-4 to translate to a .mp4 file. This is *not* what the Fuze can play. The detailed user manual available from the Sansa we site gives the specific of MPEG-4 (SP) QCIF+ 20fps. A little help from Google told me that this is actually a .avi (fully interleaved) file with the mp4 video codec and mp3 audio codec. With this information, I was able to use Any Video Converter to download and covert videos from YouTube into this format. I was then able to import these into Sansa Media Converter and transfer them to my Fuze. This is a lot of hassle for a very modest video experience in my opinion.

SOUND QUALITY: I am not the strictest of audiophiles, but I think that the Fuze sounds really good. Compared to my Clip (which is no slouch), it seems that the Fuze has a richer and fuller sound. I switched the pair of Coosh headphones that I was using on my Clip so it is an apples to apples comparison. I find the stock Sansa earphones uncomfortable after having switched to earbuds at the gym. While I haven't found them necessary, the Fuze also has a variety of equalizer settings along with the ability to customize them. I continue to be impressed with the increased sound quality I get with each subsequent Sansa media player.

DISPLAY: As an mp3 player, the display is quite an upgrade over that of the Clip. Picture and Video viewing is comparable to what you would see on a standard smartphone. I compare it to watching V-Cast videos on my LG Env and Env2 phones. It's OK to pass a little time such as in a waiting room, but I would not plan to watch a feature length movie. It's probably best for music videos (in the five minute range) at its size.

NAVIGATION: The Fuze is easy enough to use in terms of the menus. Everything behaves in an intuitive way as far as switching between functions and finding your media. One thing I like on the Fuze over the Clip is that the dial scrolls in addition to supporting four way pressing. The motion of the dial is very smooth, and it doesn't require much pressure to initiate. The only thing I don't like in the controls is that there are no dedicated volume controls. During playback you have to scroll forward to increase volume and backward to decrease.

OTHER: I tried out the FM radio in my bedroom, and I had little trouble picking up local stations. However, the primary use for FM is to pick up the audio signal for the TVs at the gym. If the gym is your primary usage, I'd probably go with the Clip+ over the Fuze. I am not a user of podcasts or audio books, but in mp3 format these should work. There are a number of options on the Fuze, but I haven't found a need to change anything from the default settings that came from the factory.

RECOMMENDATION: The Fuze is really a "tweener" in the Sansa line. Cost wise it is in the middle between the Clip+ and the View. All have micro SD card slots so it really depends on what your priorities are. If you have no interest in viewing pictures or videos on your player and you are OK with a minimal yellow and blue display, save a few dollars and go with the Clip+. If videos are your priority, go with the View. You can transfer videos directly to the View without having to fight through Sansa Media Converter. The View even works with Amazon Unbox. The View also has a larger screen, better resolution, and high storage options (up to 32 Gb). So who should get the Fuze? If your primary use is for audio but you would like the option of viewing pictures and short videos, then the Fuze is the device for you. That was what I was looking for, and the Fuze delivers for the most part. The video transfer process is what keeps this from being a five star item for me.
