Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk SDSDH-1024-901 1 GB Ultra II Secure Digital Memory Card (Retail Package)

Customer Review: Kodak camera owners take note...
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the SanDisk Ultra II card for my Kodak DX7590 camera, because I was hoping that it would be faster than the original SanDisk 512MB SD card when capturing hi-res 5MB photos. But to my surprise, it timed exactly the same. So I emailed Kodak, and this was their response: "We appreciate your interest in high speed memory for your digital camera. Our cameras are designed to operate, write and read SD cards at set voltage speeds. Therefore, there is no advantage to using faster memory in Kodak cameras."

So if you use a Kodak dock or USB cable to transfer images directly from your camera to your computer, there's no advantage to paying extra for an Ultra II; stick with the standard SanDisk and save the money. However, if you use a card reader to get images to your computer, then it might be worthwhile if your card reader is capable of utilizing the faster cards.

As far as whether you should you fork out the extra money for a 1GB card over a 512MB card? I'd say to base that decision totally on whether or not your camera shoots video. If your camera shoots video, definitely get the 1GB card since you never know when you'll need more space. But if your camera only takes still photos, 512MB is more space than most people will ever need, so why waste your money? For example, my Kodak DX7590 takes 5 megapixel images that are about 1.5MB each when saved with the highest quality JPEG setting. With the 1GB card, that would amount to holding about 648 still photos at 5MP. To put this into perspective, divide that by 24, and that's equivalent to 27 rolls of 35mm film--even more if I shoot at a lower resolution! That's WAY more than most people would EVER shoot, even on an extended vacation.

Lastly, ALWAYS TEST YOUR MEMORY CARD as much as possible before trusting it to store photos you can't afford to lose. As with most electronics, the majority of failures usually occur within the first few weeks of regular usage.
