Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk ImageMate 12-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader SDDR-89-A15

Customer Review: Fast, portable, and plug-n-playable... when it works
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a memory stick, Compact Flash and Secure Digital cards. This works with them all. I had an old card reader, a cheap plastic green one, that I gave that to my kid and got the new one. I was surprised at how noticeably faster it was over the old one. Even if you don't have USB 2.0, it's backwards-compatible. You can find out if you have 1.1 or 2.0 in this FAQ (http://www.everythingusb.com/usb2/faq.htm). When you remove the docking station (the black base), it's just as compact as my green one that I could fit into a small drawer on my desk. It doesn't feel like cheap plastic like the old one and it's sleek looking -- not that it matters.

You can keep it out of its docking station if you prefer to keep it in a drawer or do as I do and put the reader on top of my CPU that's under my desk. It comes with a USB 2.0 cable so you can hook it when it's without its docking station. Also, unlike other readers, there are labels for each slot (might be too small for some people to read) so you don't have to risk breaking something trying to remember which slot is which.

A card reader is worth the investment especially if you have more than one gadget. Instead of connecting your digital camera, PDA or whatever to the computer to upload data and media files, just take out the card and insert it into the reader. No drivers needed - it's plug 'n play in its purest form.

Updated December 5, 2007: I dropped this to three stars from the original five. It simply stopped working after barely over a year. I contacted Sandisk three times and no response. Very disappointing. With more card readers coming out smaller or built into computers -- this one is old by today's standards.

Customer Review: Only one minor annoyance...
Summary: 5 Stars

Really trivial, but my *only* gripe is that is takes up four drive letters whenever it is plugged in. Its not that I actually need those drive letters, its just that it makes "My Computer" listings a bit more cluttered.

But other than that, this reader is great. It took me longer to get the reader out of the package (that plastic clam-shell type) than it did to set it up. Litterally just plugged it in, XP recognized it and a few seconds later it was ready to go.

So far I have used CompactFlash and SD cards with awesome success. You push in the card and it is instantly accessible, when you're done just pull the card back out again. Speeds are absolutely top-notch. Much faster than when I connect the camera directly to the computer (Digital Rebel XT and an old Olympus D-510). It is as fast as if copying from one hard drive to another.

The package comes with the reader/writer, one long USB cable, one short USB cable, and a docking stand. You can leave the docking stand hooked up to the computer and take the reader/writer and the short USB cable with you on the road, for example with a laptop. The reader/writer is not very big and will easily fit in a laptop bag without taking up much room (or weight). The silver and black design should nicely complement any desk.

Add all of the above a great price point (even better at Amazon) and you can't go wrong. A great buy for those who have many different types of digital media, or for those looking for the fastest possible transfer speed.

Customer Review: Compare with other USB 2.0 readers.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have this card reader from SanDisk and another card reader from an unknown brand. Both of them are USB 2.0.

I tested the 2 card readers with a 6GB Hitachi Microdrive with more than 3GB of photos taken with Canon EOS 350D. Each photo is in Large size (8MP) and fine quality and result in an average of 3.5MB each. These photos are saved in different folders, each containing 100 photos by the camera automatically.

I first open a folder with the Sandisk reader. It does not require any waiting time to show all photos in preview mode in Windows XP. However, for another cheaper card reader, it takes about 5 min to do the same job. (My computer: AMD 4400+, 512MBx2 DDR RAM, nVidia 7800GT, ASUS A8N SLI motherboard)

Besides, this Sandisk one has constant drives. You always access your CF card in, say, E:. However, the drive changes everytime when you plug onto your computer when you are using card reader from other brands.

Conclusion: Sandisk is much faster than other brands.
What kind of people will need to buy this Sandisk one?
Professionals (stable transfer), photographers (fast), forgetful people (everytime same drive name), etc.

Last but not least, do not remove your media when the green LED is blicking (reading/writing data from/into your media). It is likely to damage ur media and info stored in it.

Customer Review: For anyone serious about digital photography, a must-have...
Summary: 5 Stars

Unfortunately, there is no single memory card standard for digital photography. But readers like this make it easy to work with all the major (and not-so-major) card formats in use today. I have yet to come across a card that I can't use with this reader.

It's recognized straight-up in Windows 2000 or XP, no driver install necessary. Anything older (like Windows 98 or Me) will probably require a driver install. It will show up as four different drives in Windows Explorer--one for each slot.

Mac OS X (10.3 and higher) will recognize it straight-up too, and it works great with iPhoto and Aperture.

Like anything else, it takes a little fiddling to get this to work with Linux. But if you've got usb-storage support set up (either in the kernel or as a module), you're already halfway there.

There's no need for a bulky power adapter. All you need to do is plug the reader into an available USB port. A USB 2.0 port is preferable, but if you're stuck with the older and slower USB 1.1, it will still work.

My only complaint is the power indicator light. It's a very bright orange and can be very distracting. Other than that, it's just about perfect.

If you're serious about digital photography, a memory card reader is a must-have. And this is easily one of the best out there.

Customer Review: Works Great with Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2
Summary: 5 Stars

I read one review for the SanDisk 8-in-1 reader not working with Windows XP-SP2 and several other reviews where it did work. Not being patient enough to wait for a reply from SanDisk customer support, I went to the store to buy it, but only one 12-in-1 model was on the shelf, so I bought that. There were no problems using it with Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Right now I have only 32MB SmartMedia cards, but they worked flawlessly in the reader/writer. I was able to insert and pull out the cards from the reader without getting the "blue screen of death." The USB 2.0 is Hi-Speed for sure. The docking station has a 40 inch cable, and there is a separate 9 inch cable to use with the reader/writer when it is unplugged from the docking station.

With the Button application installed, you can push the button and an ArcSoft application starts where you can direct your transfers. That works. In addition in Windows XP, without pushing a button, there's a built-in process where a separate dialog window opens where you can select among several actions based on the type of files on the card.

I am very pleased with my purchase, even though I paid the $34.99 retail price. Thanks to all the Amazon user reviewers of the 8-in-1, as that helped me make my selection.
