Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer Contour 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ8-8192-A75Customer Review: Fast usb flash drive Summary: 3 Stars
Ive had this usb flash drive for about 2 months now. I initially bought it to use with my samsung c6300 blu ray player so that I can watch my downloaded mvk video files on it. In order to use the full storage amount on this drive I had to reformat it to ntfs format. I find it to be very fast and reliable so far. It takes about 5 minutes to transfer a 5-7gb file to the drive. I do find the overall design to be a problem. I have to set so that I dont hide the usb jack and just keep it out all the time. I have also read there are issues with the design as the slider seems to stop working and breaks over time. So that's why I just don't use the slider and keep it out in the same position all the time. Overall great drive for the speed. It also comes with a lifetime warranty so that puts me to rest about the design flaw about the slider. I have always trusted sandisk for all my flash storage needs. I have a number of flash drives from them like 3 microsd cards 1GB (5 years old), 2GB (3 years old) and 8GB (2 years old) for use with my cannon s750 digital camera and my htc desire. I also have an older sandisk cruzer 128mb flash drive which is still ticking, I have had it for 7 years and it still works great. I do find the price kind of high given the amount of storage. I guess the price is higher than other 8gb flash drive produced by sandisk because this one is the higher end. It has the lifetime warranty and suppose to have a more reliable design and the faster transfer rate. Still I don't think this should be sold for more than $25. Personally I paid $32 but I did over pay.
Customer Review: Speedy Drive, but Case Design is Terrible Summary: 3 Stars
I specifically needed a USB flash drive with fast read/write speeds, so I was willing to overlook the stupid case design. In a way, it looks sleek and stylish, but mechanically, it's a dismal failure. It's rather large and heavy, provides no place to attach a lanyard or a key ring (except on the supplied pouch), and in the first minute of testing the open/close mechanism, it stiffened up so much that it now takes two hands to operate (with great difficulty). I fear that I will break it or lose it soon. While it was still sliding freely, the USB connector would retract while plugging it in, so I had to hold it on the sides of the case to prevent my thumb from activating the mechanism.
In my opinion, the basic Cruzer has the PERFECT size, weight, shape, open/close mechanism, and secure attachment ring. I've had one attached to my key ring for many years, and it has always worked flawlessly. Why, oh why did they have to abandon that design and mess it up for their expensive flagship model?
I uninstalled the U3 stuff and reformatted the drive for max speed and capacity. The read/write performance is fantastic, and it outperforms the basic Cruzer by a long shot.
Customer Review: Nice Piece of Equipment with a Couple of Big Drawbacks Summary: 3 Stars
SanDisk's Cruzer Contour is a beautiful piece of equipment. It is finished in what appears to be stainless steel and the unit has very nice heft to it. It works beautifully and while I didn't run any speed tests, I feel confident that its performance is equal to or better than most other USB drives. The bad news is that the Contour has two serious design flaws: first, it is wide...too wide to fit in tight circumstances such as plugging into the back of PCs or many laptops. The other problem is that it has no provision for attaching any kind of cord, strap or key chain. Its smooth (and very sleek) metal case has not hole, hook or bar. These two issues caused me to return the unit.
Customer Review: Wait For Next Model Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this 8 gig memory stick this past week. Bottom line is that the housing has real potential for jamming. It is awkward to open and close....Sandisk could have designed the outer casing much better as it feels flimsy. Other than that, it is still worth the price IF you can get it for under $100...BUT just be careful (go slow) when opening and closing it so you avoid jamming. I look forward to the next model...16 gig that is hardy and simple to use. Guess I expected better from a brillant company like Sandisk.
Customer Review: Good insides, bad mechanism Summary: 2 Stars
The drive itself works well and is decently fast. However the mechanism went bad on me, making it unusable. The mechanism used to work fine at first, but over time the door stopped closing to protect the connector. Now the connector won't stay out, so unless you have a pair of small nosed pliers, you can't even insert it into your computer. Trying to explain this to Sandisk support rep in India was a surreal experience in futility... "I can't insert the drive into the computer because the connector retracts into the contour case." "You need to use the USB connectors on the back of your computer." "I can't insert it into any connectors at all; it's a mechanical problem with the USB drive". "Okay sir, which port are you using on your computer" "All ports have this problem because the drive itself won't go in". "Which port are you using on your computer" "Uh, the back port." "Okay, does the LED flash when you insert it" "I can't insert the drive, so no, the LED does not come on". "What operating system are you using?" "I've got to go... Let me call back another time".
