Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer Contour 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ8-8192-A75Customer Review: Hardware is great, software is not. Summary: 4 Stars
I will keep this short and sweet.
This thumb drive is fast. 2 gigs copyed in 4 minutes. Also the slip and slide action of the mechanism is easily learned no problem for me even with fat swollen hands.
Customer Review: Great product Summary: 4 Stars
I use this for the ReadyBoost in Vista and it works great. The main complaint is the design of opening the USB connector. But, since I leave it in all the time I have only had to mess around with that once.
Customer Review: SanDisk 8GB Contour Summary: 4 Stars
The exterior look is very attractive and works great. But one small problem, the size of the frame around the male piece is a bit larger then the USB sockets on most computers.
Customer Review: Works as advertised Summary: 4 Stars
The only complaint I might have is that it feels a little bit fragile so I do not put it in my pocket as often as I would do with my older pen drives.
Customer Review: Works as advertised, but has some design flaws Summary: 3 Stars
It's great to have an 8 GB USB thumbdrive to hold the large amounts of mulitmedia files I need for my work. It's fast and has a wide range of useful software included. Face it, if you use an 8 GB thumb drive, you really need password protection. Fortunately, password protection is included. Remember to activate the feature, since password protection is not the default. On the downside, I have serious concerns about the durability of the device. The method for opening and closing the USB drive is awkward. It seems like a human factors design step backwards from the previous SanDisk devices. In this new iteration, it's a multi-step process, requiring a nimble backward and forward sliding action. It takes getting used to and I still don't like it. I tend to believe that the more complicated the mechanism, the more likely it is to fail, especially since it's constructed primarily from plastic (with a metal sleeve). Another problem (in my opinion) is the lack of a lanyard or a place to attach a lanyard. The soft storage case that is included can be attached to a lanyard, but not the drive itself. In my opinion, this increases the likelihood of losing the device and your data. As a U3 compatible thumb drive, this is the first drive I've owned that is large enough that I actually feel comfortable using the installed programs. In the past, I've deleted them to make room for other files. However, I'm still not 100% comfortable using a password manager in a device that can be easily lost (encryption or not). Overall, it is a functional device and I will use it extensively. I hope SanDisk returns to their simpler, one-motion, retractable design in future iterations of this device, provides a metal casing, and includes a lanyard.
Update: I've now had this drive for over two months and it has worked flawlessly. I still don't like the mechanism, but it does the job of holding my files! Also, the price has come down considerably since I wrote the initial review, so I am more inclined to recommend it.
