Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sabrent USB 2.0/eSATA to 3.5 Inch IDE or SATA/SATA II Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure Case with Cooling Fan (EC-UEIS7)Customer Review: I love mine, very glad I went with this one! Summary: 5 Stars
Like another reviewer mentioned, the fan was installed -reversed- given that the particle/dust filter is on the side, the way the fan is installed or wired, air will pull in from the front edge and exit out the side. Having this advanced warning, I plugged it in and checked. I was going to snip the wires and solder them back reversed, but it turned out, I was able to carefully pop the fan off, and insert it back in flipped. Now air is sucked in from the side where the dust filter is- and exhausts out the front edge grill.
PROS:
Smart design- ability to remove both sides to gain internal access. Screw holes align well with frame holes.
FAN. At this price, wow. And it works well.
Color. I like black. My other archive backup is in some red enclosure but I wanted it now so got it from microcenter and it was what they had.
Power supply transformer prongs are on the edge and this makes it fit in my bag front pocket well, whereas, the other enclosure supply/transformer I have prongs are such that when in my bag, I worry eventually the prongs will wear through/poke through my bag. Also having the prongs on the edge of the narrow transformer, it would fit on a strip where the fit might be tight because of other wall warts that might be on a power strip.
Cons: The fan is probably going to be installed with flow reversed given that the dust filter is placed directly over the fan on the side of the unit. Power supply wires seem thin, but it works the unit works fine with my WD Caviar Black 1TB drive, no problem, and the fan turns, so the system gets enough current despite the thin wires.
Otherwise, it has dual blue LEDs when turned on, see uploaded pictures, and small red blinks during read/write function. I have paid 40 to 50 dollars for other enclosures, and I like this one the best so far. Others have complained that the fit is too tight, I found the fit to be perfectly snug. I took my time. I did remove the IDE cable completely.
I use my drive as the initial goto archive drive for all my pictures and movies. I don't want it permanently connected when not used to any outside potentials, as I live in a lightning prone area on a ridge. Comcast has had to replace two cable modems in 6 years, as well as DVR/cable box once, I've had ham gear fried, and have replaced ether cards 3 times, routers twice. So when I have my external drive in service, I lay it flat, no way to tip over. When I'm done I disconnect it and put it away. Anyway, having a fan on the side facing up is great. I can hear the fan turning, but again, I don't keep it permanently connected to any machine for longer than a few hours, so hearing the fan is more of a plus for me than a minus.
I also ordered one of these:
Connectland CL-U2MNHUB-4B 4 Ports USB V2.0 Mini Hub (Black)
IT'S GREAT, has switches for each port, and tiny LED's at each port, so you can turn it on or off. This is great, as I connect two external drives and a card reader. I power up the drives, and when ready I can switch on each port one at a time, so my computer sees them when I want them to, not as soon as I plug them in. It works GREAT. And for the price cannot be beat.
