Customer Review: Perfect for recovering the drive in a broken computer

My daughter-in-law has a Dell with a 2.5 inch drive. The computer stopped booting; it would just sit there on the first Windows screen, forever. She was about ready to get a new computer, but she didn't want to lose the photos and documents on this one. When we removed the hard drive from her laptop (very easily done; all you need is a small phillips head, and after you remove the cover, you pull on the plastic tab attached to the drive), I discovered that it was a SATA drive, and it had a connector that I wasn't familiar with.
I looked on Amazon, found this drive, and with my "Prime" account, it was delivered in two days. At first, I couldn't attach the Dell drive to the connector that came with the StarTech box. I had to take the Dell drive out of its metal chassis, which required the removal of two more phillips head screws, using a bigger screw driver (they were tight and I needed a bit of leverage). Once I removed the drive, I also took off the dark plastic adapter at the end of the drive, revealing a "female" end on the drive that plugged perfectly with the "male" end of the top of the StarTech box. I then took the "dongle" that came with the box and plugged the mini-usb into one end and the two large usb connectors into a 6-plug USB extender that I had attached to my desktop computer (the USB extender has a small power supply attached to it; my point is that I did not have to plug the box directly into my computer, although I did use a powered extender).
I don't remember seeing one of the "windows has found new hardware" messages, and the drive did not pop up on my screen all by itself, as some memory devices do. However, I went to windows explorer, and the drive was there.
To be sure that everything was working, I clicked on the drive, found "documents" and "my pictures". Copying was very easy; about 10-12 minutes to copy 8 gigabytes of photos off the Dell drive.
After backing up the drive, I took the little tiny screws and the little tiny scredriver that came with the StarTech, and screwed tbe top (with the drive) into the rest of the box, making for a more "durable" enclosure. I'll give her the box next time I see her, and she can copy everything to her computer.
I presume that this will also give her a spare drive; it seems to work just fine. I suppose that we could just reformat it, and then copy the documents and pictures back onto it, and use it as a backup.
I never needed to read instructions, and the entire process worked flawlessly. Highly recommended.
