This is my 3rd external USB hard drive. It joins two older Maxtor OneTouch drives. Compared to the older Maxtor's it is way smaller and less noisy.
I ordered this drive with some trepidation as I have had 2 other drives (from different manufacturers) arrive DOA. But this one seems to be working fine. The auto power on/off works fine with my Dell laptop.
Note: I've only had the drive 2 days, so I can't speak for its long term reliability. But so far, so good.
I am using my own backup software so I did NOT install the software included with the drive. So this review pertains to the hardware only.

After reading several reviews, there were many that cited the heat problem. I've had the drive about a week using it solely for backup with Acronis software. No problems so far. The computer is an AMD dual core processor running Vista - no setup problems at all. Thought about drilling holes in the case to release the heat, then was hit by a brainstorm. The vents are on the bottom, strange since heat goes up, so I turned the drive upside down so the vents are up. I can feel the heat venting out the top (bottom) and the case is cooler to the touch. It still needs vent holes all around but I hope this helps.Customer Review: Easy and affordable

This is by far the easiest component I have ever purchased for my PC.
I have two teenagers that are always dowloading music,pictures,tv shows,etc. My computer kept giving low disk space message and wouldn't perform some operations because there was not enough memory.
Problem solved!!! This has saved my PC.It runs more effieciently.All the music,pic's,etc haven't even began to touch the 500Gb this unit offers.
All you do is plug in and start using. No software to install.Doesn't take up very much space on your desk either.Very affordable and simple!! You cannot go wrong with this purchase.

I purchased the Seagate External Hard Drive Seagate ST305004FDA1E1-RK FreeAgent Desktop 500 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard Drive to store digitized records for an organization of which I am the Secretary. It was delivered to my home within four days. It was easy to install - plug and play. I researched hard drives before I purchased and talked to a couple of people who are more informed than I about the brand and size of hard drive I should purchase. The Seagate Desktop External 500 USB GB Hard Drive is a dream come true. I am able to save and save my information without concern of loosing it. I am a student and therefore need a hard drive that can hold mega room for my assignments and other information. The hard drive was sent in a manner that was packed well, delivered in a very reasonable time, is just as it was described, and I would definitely buy a Seagate product again as well as buying from amazon. The whole business transaction and quality of the product is some of the best interactions and purchases I have made.
