After having my PC die once, taking many unbacked-up files with it, I felt I needed to have an external storage. I do also burn DVDs, but I like to have more than one method of backup storage so that I am sure that my things are properly saved.
This external drive fits my needs perfectly. I don't do massive downloads anymore, but I get enough media that I need to transfer it off my PC to free up space. The 500 GB is great: I don't feel that I need one of those monstrously large drives that come in TBs.
The space and the price are great for a very good product. I would recommend this external drive to anyone needing convenient, easy-to-use storage space.

I purchased the Seagate Desktop 500GB, USB External drive to store music and video from my Dish DVR and it is working great! Set up was easy...just plug it into the USB port on your DVR and follow the instructions. Of course, you will have to pay your one-time fee of $39.95 before you can use the external hard drive. Transferring music or video is very easy. My husband loves it! He can stop worrying about having enough space on the DVR. I'm very satisfied with the product and Amazon.com! I purchased this 500 gb Seagate hard drive...and immediately found it was a little difficult to get going with my new Leopard operating system on my Mac...BUT... I dialed the 1-800 number on the manufacturer's insert- and quickly found myself connected to a very helpful and knowledgable tech at Seagate - who talked me through the installation problem, and had me up and running in no time... the unit is VERY VERY quiet... sits next to my LaCie external HD... This new Seagate is MUCH quieter than the LaCie -Yikes! and it's in my music studio by my computer... so quiet is a big necessity! It was a good price, it's a good product - and I'm glad I went with this product!

I bought this 500 GB external hard drive to back up my data, I've had it for a few months and all I can say is that I'm very happy with it. The write speeds are very fast, 500 GB is a lot and I say a fair amount for around $100. The build seems solid enough, although I'm sure there's external hard drives out there with a more solid, compact, space-efficient build with better materials, but this one will do. Very attractive case, I really like the orange light on the side. Powered by an outlet plug, so this is not for those who are looking for externals only powered by USB. I like the software it comes with, the sync features are very useful, good brand name, great product!!!Customer Review: Happy that I had bought this item

I got this item almost 4 years back, and it's still working as a charm! Built as a rock! This is what I expected from my external hard disk meant for keeping valuable backups.
Was a little skeptical as the price was low compared to other HDDs at the time I bought, but it turned out to be a great buy. I have never encountered data-loss. The bulk and the need for external power might be a little inconvenient, but when it comes to reliability, it's a sure-shot winner! I have combined this hard disk with PureSync software to keep a regular backup of my data, and thanks to this combination, I was saved multiple times after the infamous windows crash!
