Customer Review: Huge hard drive on the go
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this hard drive for 2 months, and it works almost perfectly. For one, the size (in terms of gigabytes) is huge. I don't think I'll ever have a problem of not having enough space. Secondly, as many others have said, it's virtually silent. File transfer seems pretty quick as well, though I don't have anything else to compare it to.
The only "issue" I've had with it is that my laptop has trouble starting up with it plugged in. On the first try, it freezes before getting to the Windows screen. Then, after turning off the computer and trying again, it starts up, but much slower than usual. This isn't a big problem, though, as it is easily solved by simply unplugging it when I turn off my laptop. Also, this problem could be solely because of my laptop, because everything seems to work fine when using my desktop computer.

Customer Review: Almost a year later....
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the 500GB FreeAgent in June of 2008. I hooked it up to my Apple wireless Extreme Base Station and set it up as a shared drive on my home network. This drive has never, and I repeat NEVER, been turned off for any reason. It has performed flawlessly and I have the ability to access my movies, music, and pictures from any computer and any location in my home. When one of the kids come over to visit, they always bring their laptop(s), connect to the wireless network and mount the drive. They update their computers as well as adding any new files to my "storage" drive.

I have no complaints, not even one about this drive. It has run cool all these months and performed flawlessly when called up to access files on it. I LOVE IT and am thinking about moving up to the 1TB model now...

Customer Review: Works great
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't get why people give negative reviews because they didn't READ the product description to learn that there is no auto-backup in this device. Common sense folks, if that's what you were looking for, why didn't you pay for a drive that SAID it could do that, and not assume that one of the cheapest 500GB drives you found would have all the bells and whistles.

The drive works great. I know other people have had overheating problems, or power supply failures, but I packed it with 400GB of media, and have had it on for over a week with no adverse effects.

All you have to do it plug it in, and Windows picks it up. There are no lengthy instructions because there are no steps to follow. step 1) plug in. Now you're done. You're big boys and girls, no one needs to hold your hand.

Customer Review: Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB drive
Summary: 5 Stars

So far, I'm nothing but impressed by my FreeAgent drive. The drive has a very low, soothing sound, feels lukewarm when I touch it, and is so very easy to use. My computer immediately detects it, and it's right there with my laptop booting--ready to go. (I'm a recent convert to Linux.) We've owned it for a few months now, and I use it off and on to store our son's baby pictures. With Linux, this drive is unbelievable. It would probably run just as well on the Windows side, but I haven't tried it yet. No errors, and I leave it on for a few hours at times. To be safe, though, I have some Kingston flash drives that I'll use to back up the folders. Find a great deal on this drive, or just get a FreeAgent Go; this one was cheaper at the time for me.

Customer Review: Very Quiet and Low Vibration
Summary: 5 Stars

Pros: Quietest external hard drive I have seen and runs with very low vibration. I also have the Western Digital My Book Premium 500GB that is much louder and causes much more vibration on the desk and is warmer. Well designed case, including a thinner than normal USB cable, a 1 piece AC adapter that is about 1.5"x3" in size, and all cables plug neatly at the bottom of the base. Works as expected on a Mac. Uses perpendicular magnetic recording technology.

Cons: Limited to only a USB2 interface. This limits Sustained Read/Write speeds to roughly 18MB/sec whereas an external hard drive on Firewire would have Sustained Read/Write speeds of around 30MB/sec. There is a very hard to find and much more expensive Firewire version though.
