Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB 3.5-Inch USB 2.0 Hard Drive ST305004FDA1E1-RKCustomer Review: Solid workhorse for my home needs Summary: 5 Stars
I've got a pair of these sitting on my desk (with a 1 TB model to back them up). Seeing as my C: drive is only 160GB, just one of these drives serves as a backup of all my important documents and files, plus holds a TON of music, pictures and video.
And because these are so affordable, it's well within reason to have a second one at its side backing up the first.
That's just what I've done and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. These drives are super easy to set up - if you can plug a digital camera into your computer you can set one of these up - operate fast and are nice and quiet. No muss, no fuss, and without bundles of unnecessary bloatware to clog up your system. Just a good, solid hard drive.
Oh, and they're darn spiffy looking, too.
I own THREE of these models and they've all chugged along without a kink. Mine see use for data storage, backups, to serve media to my Xbox 360, and to transport large amounts of data between computers.
Solid stuff. Recommended.
Customer Review: Great backup device Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this item in August to store large media files, music, and backup large folders of archived documents. It's now December and I have had no technical difficulties with the drive. I would prefer if the drive did not come pre-installed with Seagate's backup software but it was easy enough to disable. I never intended this to be a portable solution (I bought another Seagate drive for that purpose) and it's certainly not designed for the road-warrior. At nearly half a terabyte (465GB of usable space), you probably don't need to walk around with it. It's a little heavy for its size so I wouldn't consider throwing it in my briefbag but I guess one could. It's reasonably quiet and the vertical size with the fan base makes it easy to sit on a desk. I don't leave it plugged into my computer though, which may avoid some of the other problems in the other reviews. I only plug it in when I want to transfer files and then unplug it. If you are looking for an archival/backup solution, this is a good choice.
Customer Review: Seagate rocks! Summary: 5 Stars
An external USB drive with it's own fan, power supply, and 5 year warranty. This one is a great design as well. It is solidly built. Heavy duty. Fast and well designed.
Western Digital and Maxtor eat the dust of Seagate. Ask them why they do not offer up a 5 year warranty on their external drives. They don't even dare to offer up 5 year warranties on their internal drives!
Again, Seagate rocks.
I've been installing drives since the day Rodime was still around. Any old timers out there know what I mean. I remember installing the old MFM and RLL drives in the 5Mb and 10Mb sizes. And Seagate has always been the best of the best. They last the longest on average and offer up the best service and warranties.
Make your own decision but decide on Seagate.
Finally, what I paid for this drive, less then $150.00 for the 500Gb external, I could not buy a 150Gb external of any brand at any big-box store.
Customer Review: SUPER Excellent!! Awesome! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this external hard drive, and guess what? IT'S AWESOME! Everything works perfect. Stores millions of files, and is very reliable. It's quiet, and really nice looking. I would say that Seagate Free Agent 500 GB is better than the Western Digital My Book 500GB. It's size and design, is nicer than WB My Book. ONE THING, is that it isn't exactly 500 GB, it IS 465 GB (on all of them). I found that out, and checked on others. Western Digital My book (500), is also 465 GB. IT'S ON ALL OF THEM. So that's good. That's actually because they count 1,000,000 Kb as 1 Gb.. Anyways, by the way, It has No on/off button, but that is actually good, cause it's always ON. It doesn't run out of power, because it has power supply. ALSO, when not using it for like 15 mins. it becomes idle. And when continuing your work on it, it quickly comes back to normal mode. And as somebody said already: No power off switch, so it powers on/off with the PC (the USB connection triggers this). REALLY NICE!
Customer Review: Fast, quiet, stylish, easy to use. Summary: 5 Stars
I own this drive for about two month (FreeAgent Desktop 750 Gb). It may not be long enough to say how reliable it is, but so far I had no problems.
It has everything that I expected and more. It's fast, very quiet, stylish, very easy to use. It never gets overheated (like some reviews say about Pro version), although I use it quite heavily.
My previous WD external drive I had to return, because it was very slow and prevented my PC from booting. Never had this problem with this drive.
It took me some time to accept that this drive doesn't have On/Off button, but then I realized that I actually don't need it. It starts and shuts down automatucally with my PC, and this is OK with me.
So in general - excellent drive for most people, although probably not for professional. But it's a Desktop version, not Pro.
