Customer Review: Great Home Theater PC card

I bought this card specifically to help build a Home Theater PC, primarily to watch movies on HULU and Netflix.
I chose this card for the following reasons:
- PCIe 16x card = no video bottleneck
- HDMI output = plugs straight to my TV with one connection for HD video & Audio
- no fan = no additional noise from the PC
- Low-profile = fits in a Small Form Factor case (This card comes with double SFF back-connectors - you take off the full-height back-plate and replace it with two half-height back plates. The VGA connector moves down to the second back-plate and fits in an adjacent slot, connecting by the existing ribbon cable)

This video card works VERY nicely in a HTPC for the reasons stated above. It also displays older games with no problems as well as regular office applications: so I can check E-mail on the TV. (I used the card in a refurbished HP DC5750 PC - small form factor, bought off of e-bay)

WARNINGS: Do NOT buy this for the latest (DirectX 10) games and expect top performance. Be careful to read your motherboard specs to make sure it supports PCIe 16x cards. (And watch out for "PCIe 16x SDVO" ports - those only work with proprietary "SDVO" cards.

I noticed many people complaining about Audio not working with this card. I skipped the disk that came with the card and got the latest drivers instead - had no problems with my install. Go to the Sapphiretech website and click DOWNLOAD > Graphic card > PCI-E > Sapphire HD 4550 series > Sapphire HD 4550 512MB DDR3 PCI-E Fanless
Download and install at least these 2 drivers to get Audio over HDMI:
1) The latest Catalyst Software Suite (11.1 when I did it)
2) The latest ATI HDMI Audio Driver (also 11.1 when I did it)

You might also consider downloading the Transcoding drivers (If your monitor/TC doesn't support certain resolutions) and Hydravision if you want a "virtual" desktop that is larger than your monitor.
Another alternative if your TV is one of those "picky" ones that doesn't support some resolutions: a program called Powerstrip. (Free to try, $29.95 to buy) If Windows doesn't tell you what resolutions your monitor supports, try reading the manual for your TV (or Google the info).
