Customer Review: True Hi-Def at a bargain price

My beautiful and thoughtful wife surprised me with this camera for Christmas. I've put it through its paces since then, and I'm impressed with how well this small, inexpensive unit performs.
Let's get the "cons" out of the way. 1. Battery charge is kinda short, especially if you're going full tilt HD. Sanyo went for a small, compact design, and made the battery the size of a cell phone battery. You get about 30-45 minutes recording time in HD - that's it. 2. All things being equal, the higher the definition you want to record, the more light you need. So in really low light, the image I see is not true Hi-Def (though it's a pretty good low-light image with some noise). 3. Sanyo doesn't include everything you really need with the camera; you absolutely have to buy an SD or SDHC card to record onto. I wouldn't buy one any smaller than 8 GB. Also, you'll need to buy an HDMI to mini-HDMI cable and an AC adapter, at a minimum. I'm still trying to find an appropriate AC adapter. (I also recommend you buy at least a UV filter to protect your lens and improve daylight shooting.)
The good news is that Amazon sells battery chargers and batteries for this camera dirt cheap. Just do a search and you'll find them. They're so small, you can buy a couple of extra and carry three of them with you. Same thing for the UV filter, and especially for the SD card: Amazon has about the cheapest prices I've seen on the SD cards.
One other "con" that might not apply to you: my hands shake a bit, so I need to have the camera on a tripod, especially if I'm doing any zooming. Amazon has good prices on these, too. You don't need a heavy-duty one, just buy a light-weight, inexpensive one.
On the plus side, the camera's features are all driven by menus you access with one button and the "navigator" keys we're all accustomed to from our TV remotes. A few minutes with them and you'll learn everything easily. Or, you can put the camera in "simple" mode, and everything is just about "point and shoot" automatic. The picture quality with decent to good lighting is frighteningly good. I hooked the camera up directly to a 50" HDTV and viewed some video directly off of the camera. It was startling! Even my wife, who's not easily impressed by techie stuff, was wowed. The sound was really good, too. Sanyo puts the microphones on the back of the display door instead of the front of the unit.
Given the small size and price, and the ease of use in "simple" mode plus a good degree of options for the more sophisticated user, combined with the astounding picture, this camera is a winner.
