Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sabrent USB to DB25 Female Parallel Converter Adapter 6-Foot Cable (USB-DB25F)Customer Review: connecting to HP LaserJet 4P Summary: 5 Stars
I have a HP LaserJet 4P purchased in 1994 which is a workhorse and has never had a problem from my desktop, but I wanted to print to it from my HP laptop running on Windows XP. After reading reviews at Amazon, I ordered this product from this website, as the other--many of them excellent--reviews indicated that there were problems with getting such connectors to work but that this one seemed most likely to work with my printer.
I turned on the printer and connected the parallel end of the USB-parallel connecting cable to the end of the printer cable which is usually attached to my desktop (hence the parallel end of the USB-parallel cable is called 'female'; the two parallel ends look somewhat funny together, but the connection is good even without being able to employ the two screws on each plug). There is a small disc containing drivers, but it was accurately noted in the instructions that one does not need it for computers operating on ME/2000/XP/Vista. The small complication was that I was uncertain what my laptop would regard as the port: the USB or the virtual parallel. The prompt was to treat it as a typical parallel LPT1 port, but this did not work, and it is perhaps also why there was no HP4P icon in the window I got to through start>printers and faxes (or control panel>printers and faxes), but in this window I was able to add the printer through file>add printer and following the instructions.
To get the printer to print I had to go to start>printers and faxes (or control panel>printers and faxes)>files>properties>ports and select "USB virtual printer port for USB", after which it works fine.
