PRO:
Used this to connect to my APC UPS when my new PC didn't have any serial ports. After plugging it in, Linux recognized it immediately and assigned it to /dev/ttyUSB0 and was ready to use.
Foot long cable prevents crowding out other nearby ports the way some single-piece USB-to-Serial adapters do.
I connected the cable which was previously attached to the serial port on my old PC to it and configured the UPS software to use /dev/ttyUSB0 instead of /dev/tty0. All is well.
I have since used another one of these for connecting to HP, Cisco and 3com networking equipment as well as a modem. This was under various Linux distributions and from varying computers. The only time I have had a problem was on an older release of Linux which hadn't been patched/updated for a couple of years.
CON:
It isn't apparent that Linux recognizes the adapter since nothing pops up on your screen like you might expect if you are used to Windows. Running the command "dmesg" from a console screen shows several lines about usb and USB Serial including:
usb 1-1.5: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0
In other words, use dmesg to find out what the device name is that you will have to connect to. This is a Linux thing and doesn't really detract from this product.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
One foot isn't too short if you are just using it to add a 9-pin serial port to your PC. Use the serial cable you normally would have connected directly to the PC's serial port if it had one.
If you want to connect directly to a device without two cables, you'll need something like DB9 Female to DB9 Female Mini Gender Changer or maybe DB9 Female to DB25 Female Serial Adapter
