Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sabrent SBT-USC1K Hi-Speed USB 2.0 to Serial DB-9 RS-232 Adapter Cable (Black)Customer Review: Excellent Physical Hardware, Perfect Linux Compatibility Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this unit because of the picture I saw. If you look closely, you will see that the DB9 (serial, RS-232) end of the cable looks like a proper male serial cable end. It has male pins, male thumbscrews, and no protruding hardware around the DB9 connector itself.
I have used several other serial adapters and all seem to have clunky or weird hardware that protrudes into the space around the connector. This kind of protruding hardware makes it difficult to connect an adapter directly to hardware that has the usual female thumbscrew receiver bolts. In each case with those bad designs, a female-to-male serial adapter cable was required just to connect to simple hardware.
This unit has no such problem. It mates perfectly and should be used as a design model for every serial-to-USB adapter (are you reading this, Keyspan?).
I also liked the short cable. I already have a half mile of wire lying on the desk so it's nice to be able to get a short adapter.
Regarding software and drivers, I use Linux on my computers and have had a perfect experience. Just plug-and-go. The drivers are built into the kernel already.
