Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sabrent SBT-EKU25 Ultra Slim USB 2.0 2.5-inch IDE/PATA Hard Drive Enclosure (Black)

Customer Review: Win XP - don't use disk - good product but needs better instructions
Summary: 4 Stars

Sabrent has been good to me to date so far. I have had several products of theirs and each time I have been pleased, but the instructions for this product are seriously lacking. I believe they were written before Win XP ever came out and I have no clue if this will work with Vista, you'll have to read another review for that one.

It couldn't be any simpler of a device to put together though.
Open box, insert 2.5" laptop HDD and then slide together.
Insert holding screws (they give you a little screw driver for this as well)
connect the cable (double end goes to PC, you need 2 open USB ports on PC)
plug other cable end into unit and it'll power up and your PC will take a moment to recognize it then it's off to the races.

Transfer rates will be limited by the HDD that you place in the device.

I transferred over 12 gigs in like 25 minutes with a 5400rpm old as heck 20gig laptop HDD (yeah it's a 20gig, it's from like 2001 out of my old gateway laptop from when I was in the military).

The only thing I would like to see different with this device is a better set of instruction. If you are familiar with Sabrent though you will know that XP typically doesn't need a driver installed as they use standardized equipment and so on.

Basically this is the best bang for the buck.

Notes on the LED on the case:
green means it's ready and waiting (not in use/being read)
orange/redish light means it's either being read or written to.

Customer Review: Review using this on Linux
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this to use to recover data from laptop hard drives. I found it worked great. And I use Linux.

When the device was plugged into the laptop (with just a single USB port, didn't plug both ports in) it was immediately recognized and my (recent Fedora) recognized the disk and mounted the accessible partitions automatically. I had some issues with other partitions due to LVM stuff. However I can hardly blame that on the HD enclosure.

One thing I particularly liked about the enclosure was the fact that it came with a screw driver for installing/uninstalling the hard drive in the enclosure.

I've seen some negative reviews here, and I have an older model of this sort (from a few years ago) which did not work as advertised (I tried the new one with the old hard drive from the old model I never got working and it worked like a charm). Perhaps some problems have been fixed? Or perhaps something else has changed? Or perhaps I got lucky this time and they have quality control issues? Either way, this worked well for me.

Customer Review: Very good for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this to facilitate replacing a hard drive in an older model notebook using Arconis True Image. I didn't need a high quality enclosure, just one that would get the job done while transfer files from my old hard drive to the new one. This enclosure worked perfectly for my purposes and now serves as a back up drive for the computer.

Pros:

1) Price is right
2) A very nice looking enclosure
3) Good transfer speeds over USB 2.0

Cons:

1) Not impressive in build quality. The tiny screws used to secure the drive closed are pretty poor.
2) Requires two USB connectors to function properly. If your laptop doesn't have two USB connectors right next to each other, this could prevent you from using the drive at all.

Conclusions:

This is a very inexpensive enclosure that is ideal if you plan on giving it light use. If you need a high quality enclosure, you might want to choose a different one.

Customer Review: Works as Advertised. A Bit Chintzy
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased two of these enclosures due to an Alienware laptop that bit the dust. A minor note, don't buy Alienware products they are awful.
The kits are extremely simple to use and worked without issue. Windows Vista picked up the drive as soon as it was plugged in and installed the correct drivers. Amazing I know :)
It is nice that the kit also comes with a dual USB cable to ensure you can power larger hard drives. This came in handy since I had two 100 gig drives that needed more power.
The only quibble I had with the kit was the quality of the fasteners and enclosed screwdriver. Both are very cheap and if you need to apply any sort of force to fasten the faceplate to the shell, you will strip the heads off the screwdriver or screws. So it's a good idea to have your own screwdriver for the assembly.

Customer Review: Works well but be careful when plugging in drive
Summary: 4 Stars

Check that the drive is not attached to the IDE connector upside down, since there is nothing that indicates which way is up until you attempt to slide on the enclosure. The enclosure won't fit if the drive has been plugged into the connector upside down.

If you test a drive without using the enclosure, as I did, and cannot read the disk, then the drive may be upside down (or set to be a slave, or a master with slave, or the drive or connector might be defective).

First check that the enclosure will slide on as designed. If it does slide on at least you know that it's connected correctly and you've got other problems.

Other than that, the unit is sturdy and once you get the tiny screws in the holes it is easy to assemble. I wouldn't recommend dropping a screw on a shag rug though.
