Customer Review: Amazing Quality for the Price.

I received the Sabrent Hard Drive Enclosure today. When I opened the box I couldn't believe how nicely it was constructed. I'm an engineer so I know what to look for in items like this. However, there are a few caveats. My hard drive plugged in without any problems. Four of the pins don't contact the connector, but apparently they are not needed.
The first hitch ocurred when I tried to slide the drive into the aluminum enslosure. It wouldn't go all the way in. I noticed that the back cover has two tabs to hold it in place. The tabs were sticking out just enough to prevent the drive from going all the way in. I removed the back cover and saw the problem. The holes in the enclosure had very small burrs left over from the manufacturing operation. A twist of a small drill with my fingers took off the burrs pretty easily. Then the tabs would push right up against the inside of the enclosure and allow the hard drive to go all the way back.
The second hitch ocurred when I tried to install the tiny, tiny screws they give you. You only need 2 screws but they give you three in case you lose one, a nice touch. I discovered that the holes for the screws aren't drilled deep enough causing the screws to stick out. I was inclined to drill them deeper, but decided instead to just use a piece of black electrical tape to hold the cover in place. It's a pretty snug fit and the tape provides an easy and secure way of preventing it from sliding out. It doesn't look too bad either as the tape matches the case pretty well.
Now for the reason I bought the enclosure in the first place. The 40 GB drive on my laptop started running slow and losing files. I replaced it with a 250 GB WD drive and everything was back to normal. But I wanted to recover any data that was left on the original drive. I wasn't sure this enclosure would work with a defective drive but took a chance anyway.
Well I'm happy to say it worked perfectly. I just plugged it in to a USB port and the drive came right up in Windows Explorer. I looked at the properties and sure enough the entire 40 GB was there. It was a simple matter to copy and paste the files I was interested in. I guess I got lucky because my old drive seems to work OK for a little while, just long enough to copy some files, then starts to slow down when it gets hot.
Overall I would say the Sabrent SBT-EKU25 is a great product for data recovery or for occasional backups. I would not recommend it for carrying around because it really has no padding for the internal drive unless you keep it in a padded camera case. Just be aware you might have to spend a couple of minutes de-burring the case before using it, but that was no big deal if you have some drill bits around. A great product for a great price.
