Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of RF-Link AVS-5811 5.8GHz Audio and Video Transmission System with IR RepeaterCustomer Review: The product works as stated, but not for what I had in mind Summary: 5 Stars
Although I ended up returning the item (I'll explain later), the product works exactly as it should. I had a bit of a problem hooking it up since I don't have a cable box. My cable line goes into my VCR, then out to the TV. Hook up depends on where your direct cable line is. I called tech support and the man I spoke with (who BTW was very nice) walked me through the entire thing. Someone stated in an earlier review that it doesn't work with a Panasonic VCR. Untrue! Mine is a Panasonic. After hooking up the cables correctly, I had to put the sending TV on the TV channel for the VCR (mine is channel 3). The receiving TV however, must be put on the Aux mode or more specifically, AV 1,2, or 3. I tried this product throughout my entire house, through floors, closets, etc. It worked without a hitch. Everything came through crystal clear. My problem was I wanted to use it to send the signal to our metal pole barn which is 50 feet from the house. When I called back tech support, I was told it couldn't penetrate through metal. Therefore after much thought, I returned it. But I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to hook up cable within their house without running a lot of wires. I gave it five stars because it's an amazing product even though I couldn't use it for what I had in mind and also because the tech support was above averageRF-Link AVS-5811 5.8 GHz Wireless PAL A/V Sender AVS5811PAL CAMCORDERS CONS-Wireless Video Equipmen.
Customer Review: Outstanding Unit works great Summary: 5 Stars
I had some concerns about the unit because the 2.8 Ghz that I have tried have suffered from all kinds of static from wireless phones and wireless video cameras. This 5.8 Ghz unit is outstanding, setup is simple and no interference, its close to having a hard wired system. Saved me a lot of work.
Update: Have had the units just under a year they work great but there are some issues. The first is the frequency. It seems that some of the units out in the market have a narrower frequency than others. Using it with a new Direct TV receiver was a problem. The company has corrected this but if you get one of the older units you won't know why it doesn't work. The company did exchange the units. It was finding out what the problem was that was frustrating. Secondly my original units were 12v and overheating proved to be a major problem. At first I just thought I was have interference problems, however, as the units ran over a short period of time they would overheat and loose the signal making it hard to change channels and breaking up the picture. The company now makes a 9v unit and did exchange the old 12v units. The new ones seem to be fine.
I would purchase these again however, if you have any problems don't hesitate call the company they were very helpful. Check which version you are buying the best is the new 9 volt broader frequency units.
Customer Review: Perfect for bedside video operation Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this product for more than a year and it is now indispensable to me. I bought it for setting up a bedroom video system with a ceiling hung TV and DVD player etc at waist height. Running the wires all over without creating a trip hazard was a real challenge until I found this product. But now I have even more need for it... I had an operation and will be bedridden for at least 2 months. So before the surgery I set up a bookcase next to the bed and arranged my DVR, D-Link Medialounge player, and an interface to my laptop for Netflix movies. Then I linked them all to the RF-Link sending unit via the DVR. It works flawlessly. The antennae don't even have to face each other; the sender has even fallen off the bookcase and still sent video to the TV while hanging upside down near the floor. A couple times over the year I had to ask my tall neighbor to unplug the receiving unit then replug it - needed resetting for some reason - but that happened only twice in about 18 months of almost daily use. And it never interferes with wireless signals - the Medialounge, laptop wireless, cell phones, cordless phones, and wifi enabled PDAs are often used within a foot or so of the sending unit, which is always on. This is a good use of your money if you want to eliminate all those wires. If I had a suggestion that would be to add s-video and maybe HDMI video capability.
Customer Review: A good option for the analog to digital conversion Summary: 5 Stars
I am very impressed with this product. Using it in a split-level home, got the alignment right on the first attempt (hint: take care of the alignment as you install the devices, a little planning will possibly avoid some aggravation). Picture and sound are clear and crisp, digital quality (no ghosting or other analog artifacts). The IR extender for the remote was flawless. Breathe new-life into those pre-digital TVs, share a cable connection instead of acquiring an over-the-air converter box. Five stars!
UPDATE: Okay, ordered a second set and received a bad receiver (terrible audio buzz when video signal was bright or white, confirmed by swapping with a known good receiver). Returning to Amazon for replacement, will update review again upon receipt of replacement unit.
UPDATE: Amazon sent the replacement next-day at no charge, I printed the return label and sent the defective unit back to them (also at no charge). The replacement worked perfectly, and the return was processed within a week's time. So, take the time to aim the units, if it doesn't work perhaps see how the received signal looks short range (within a few feet of the transmitter). If it doesn't work short range you may want to try a replacement out first. My experience (so-far) is that this is a terrific technology, but defective units are out there.
Customer Review: It does everything I've hoped for Summary: 5 Stars
After quite some research on the web, I was finally convinced this system will do the trick to stream video and audio on my computer in the bedroom to my TV and stereo in the living room, and it does. There is really no trick what so ever to set it up. It's just a matter of plugging in everything.
I have a video card on my computer with S-video out. Unfortunately, the transmitter does not take S-video, so I got a S-video to RCA cable, which works just fine. Once I setup the dual display mode for my video card, I see the my desktop on TV right away. But to see video play on TV, I have to set the TV as the default display. This is where the problem come in for me.
The video cards on desktop computer doesn't routinely come in with hotkey setup to allow you switch between different displays, although most of the note book computers do. I forget to set this up before I turn the TV into default display to see the video. So once I turned my TV into default display I lost my display on monitor, and that took me quite a while to fix. But the RF Link itself just works flawless.
Now I can forget about the 300 dollar streamers that can only recognize certain files on my computer. Whatever I can play on my computer, mp3, DivX, rmvb, anything, I can also sit in my coach, watching it on TV and listening it on my big stereo, ha!
