Customer Review: Much better than you should expect at this price
Summary: 5 Stars
Is this really a Ritz-Carlton-standard five-star quality audio device? No, not really; no FM modulator is any better than a stop-gap solution. But for under $7, I'm very impressed, and with other people giving it one star reviews, I think it deserves a little boost. Here's the breakdown:
FM Quality: (Range = 87.5-108 MHz in 0.1 increments). It works much, much better than the $40 Belkin unit that I just returned. I'm in Seattle, where the FM spectrum is busy, and this little unit holds its own against spill from the commercial transmitters. (By contrast, the Belkin unit only approached acceptable performance in a remote mountain valley, far from powerful radio signals). It's also shielded well from hi-frequency microwave interference - such as that caused by an iPhone. There's none of the rapid clicking that the Belkin modulator suffered from.
Audio Quality: Not much sign of distortion, even with the volume on the MP3 player set at 90% of the maximum. Previous modulators I've used haven't been able to handle source audio levels set above 50-60% of maximum. Some system noise, but tolerable. It was also able to handle the booming bass from some King Tubby recordings; if it can handle that, it can handle most anything. Honestly, it is not close to hi-fi quality; it's slightly lower quality than FM radio, but, as I say, this is a stop-gap solution. My expectations were accordingly modest.
Build Quality: Light, plasticky, nothing special. The credit card sized remote barely works.
Design: So-so. It's the type that you stick directly into a cigarette lighter, which might not work in all cars. The small control panel on the top is hinged so that one can adjust the angle to see it more easily.
Caveats:
1. The stupidly short, 6 inch M-M 3.5mm stereo cable that ships with the unit. For $2.55 I've just ordered a longer replacement cable.
2. I have not used this device as an MP3 player, merely as an FM modulator (transmitter) for external MP3 players (both a Zune and an iPhone). Looking at the design, I'm going to guess that this using this device as your main MP3 player would be very frustrating.
3. If you cut power to the device, it resets the transmission frequency. That's a pain, but it takes about 5 seconds to reset it.
4. Judging from build quality, low price, and the number of one star reviews here, I'm also going to guess that quality control from this manufacturer is far from perfect. You might need to return a faulty unit for replacement.
Overall: For this price you can't go wrong.
