Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Eagle Aspen Dtv2Buhf Directv 2-Bay Uhf AntennaCustomer Review: Less Powerful the the more expensive DB2 Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this antenna based on the reviews that said it had the same power as the more expensive DB2. However, the shipping box that the antenna comes in states the gain is only 10dB on channel 69, 9 db on channel 50, 8 dB on channel 32, and 6 dB on channel 14 with an average VHF High-band Gain of -8 db.
The Antennas Direct website says the gain of the more expensive DB2 antenna is up to 11.4 dB.
So although there is no apparent difference in the pictures, the more expensive DB2 antenna is more powerful.
I am 22 miles from the Chicago transmitters and I have my Eagle Aspen Dtv2Buhf 2-Bay UHF Antenna mounted to a Torchiere style floor lamp (that I dumpster dived) placed by my patio sliding door. I can get 32 stations clearly now (as of 1/30/2009 before the switchover), but I could only get 20 stations clearly if I jammed the antenna next to the TV stand and even less if I just placed it behind the TV stand. So the Eagle Aspen Dtv2Buhf antenna is very sensitive to placement. I recommend that you consider a rotatable stand, with a higher placement being better, if you buy the Dtv2Buhf for use as an indoor antenna.
Although I am doing okay with this antenna at 22 miles from the Chicago transmitters, because of it's sensitivity and less power I would only recommend it for use as an indoor antenna up to 15 miles from a transmitter . If you are 15-30 miles from your transmitters and want an indoor antenna, strongly consider spending the extra bucks and get the more expensive DB2. *UPDATE - BE SURE TO BUY NEW RG6 CABLES TO REPLACE OLD RG59 CABLES*
This is an update to my 1/30/2009 review. After the analog to digital conversion (6/16/2009) I can get 43 (digital) TV stations instead of 32. I picked up all remaining "yellow" stations (including channel 2 from Chicago which I didn't get before) and one "blue" station (channel 23 from Chicago) as classified on [...]. I do not pick up any "light green", "red", or "violet" stations.
I had to do two things: a) move my indoor antenna in front of my patio door, b) buy a new RG6 12 foot cable to replace my 10 year old 7 foot RG59 cable. As a result of buying the new RG6 cable, even although it is longer, my signal strength on my weakest station improved from 65% to 85% on my converter. I needed the longer length of cable to beautify my dumpster dived Torchiere lamp on which I have my antenna mounted for easy rotation because after the move the old cable was taunt and looked ugly tightly stretched across from the TV stand.
*UPDATE - Now getting 44 stations as additional stations convert 7/10/09*
*UPDATE - Now getting 46 stations as additional stations convert 8/05/09*
So be sure to rescan your TV/converter periodically to pick newly converted stations up. I read somewhere that stations will continue to convert to digital through the end of the year.
