This stuff is NOT supposed to be super sculpey-It's released by the sculpey company for we sculptors who find super sculpey too soft, and too difficult to detail with fine tools. It is not intended to be used the same way one would use super sculpey.
For me, super sculpy is way too soft...after working with it for 10 minutes, it has warmed to a point where it can't even stand without an armature or support. And forget tools for fine detail like skin wrinkles.
Not so with this firm stuff.
For carved style sculpture, this stuff is a dream, save a little on the expensive side.
I blow through a whole pound box on just one 9" manette or one 6" bust-Same with super sculpey; its not as cost effective as wet kiln clay, but much more convenient and less messy. It is cheaper than stone, but you're pretty limited to small scale items with only a pound.
To combat the crumbling, sculpey has an oil based thinner you can use much the same way one works water with wet clay (wet clay crumbles without lubrication, as well. It is the nature of clay.).
Point is, this is not super sculpey, and isn't to be used as such.
