Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Polk Audio PSW505 12-Inch Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black)Customer Review: I can't believe its not butter... I mean a 15" Summary: 5 Stars
Wow, I mean wow! This is a great sub. The bass is deep and loud. I listen to a lot of rap and R&B, and this sub is spot-on on how the sample was envisioned to sound. I will admit that it may have too much bass. But, it is really good with movies. You can tell that this product is well designed. I'm actually buying 2 Polk 505 subs, the second is on the way. However, I'm wreastling on taking that one back because the one gives a lot of bass. That being said, I may keep it. I don't have to have both on all the time. And, with my Onkyo, I am able to adjust the sub's volume. This is a good thing because I can still keep the bass up in my fronts and keep the music having a full sound.
I have some old technics. I have a little story I want to tell. When the ups man first came by, I was not home, I ride the bus to work to save money. But, I drive sometime because I need to make up my time or handle business. So I was running home trying to catch the UPS man. I seen UPS leaving my court in my neighborhood. I knew I had missed him. But, my neighbor signed for my subs. He said to me, "Wow, does your Technics make all that noise", not knowing I got some 10" Sony sub which sounds pretty good. I told him that the 12" Technics I got work in concert with my Sony sub. Now the box that the Polks 12" 505s come in are big. So, he was looking at me like wow man. The sub is pretty intimidating when looking at it. But, the thing that helps it out is the fact that it is black. Anyway, I started doing sound test last night when I got it. I knew that it would completely drown out my Sony 10" sub because the watts on it is only like 100 watts as maximum output. So what I did was bought me a 50 foot audio coaxial cord and position my Sony 10" behind my couch. Now, don't get me wrong, that Sony gets up. I saw it necessary to buy these subs because the Sony does in fact have limitation when it comes to deep loud bass lines. One of the song it has trouble with is Killa Cam by Cam'ron. When I had my Cobe, it sounded good, but now my Onkyo has higher db(s). So you can hear the crackling when turning up a mid-range model stereo receiver. The Sonys position worked well because even though I couldn't hear it, I can feel the bass lines, being that it was positioned behind my couch. This was a good thing. When I turned on Killa Cam and turned up the volume, I turned my Onkyo on normal loud which is around 15. The bass was amazing. However the true test is at about 23 to 25 volume, didn't go any louder because my pictures were rattling. At that volume, there was just all smooth hard bass with all the lows combined with my technics and Sony. It was beautiful. I am scared for my Sony because my Onkyo gets up and I'm scared that its going to kill it. I'll probably just put the Sony in my room with the Coby reciever (my Coby sucks but the Sony makes up for its faults).
Again my second sub is coming. I'm not going to leave both on if I decide to keep it because it is not even necessary to have both on. Only maybe it is necessary to leave both on if you're listening to a movie in DTS (DTS takes alot of bass out so that the sound sounds clearer). If I have one problem with this sub, is that it doesn't have a power save function at least from what I've seen. I didn't mind until I saw that when I turned off my receiver and notice the sub doesn't turn off when you turn the receiver off. That kind of sucks because in a year or so, if you don't turn it off on the regular, this could lead it to burning out. I don't know how hot this thing gets. I left it on today while I'm at work. When I come home, I'll check and see how hot it is to see if it is a real problem.
It was a bummer that Amazon uped the price to 399. I don't know why they did that. I went to Newegg, they sold it for what Amazon was selling it for before Amazon jacked up the price. I still left some money on the table because Newegg sold it at one point for about 199, then it went back up to 224. I decided to nab it because I thought they would raise the price like Amazon.
In conclusion, I just think that this is a phenomenal product compared to whats out there for the Newegg price. But even at Amazon's current price this could easily be 599 sub. The sound is amazing and if you don't have the ability to adjust your receiver's sub output, then you can adjust the volume on the actual subwoofer. Great product!
