Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Plantronics DSP-400 Digitally-Enhanced USB Foldable Stereo Headset and Software

Customer Review: Flexibility is key
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had my headset for three months now and I have to say this is the best headset I have every owned. The flexibility offered with the hinged folding feature of this headset makes it unbeatably comfortable and durable for all sizes and shapes.

I put this headset through its paces. I use it for transcription work from audio tapes. I also use it for dictations with Dragon Naturally Speaking. I've also been known to fall asleep wearing it while listening to music in bed only to wake in the morning still wearing it. Lately I've been using it to make calls to people all over the world using Skype.

The sound and recording quality is unbeatable and I really like the adjustable volume control on the headset cable. Speaking of the cable, that extra long cable gives you a lot of mobility to move around the desk while talking.

Needless to say, I wear this headset for many hours of the day. It's so comfortable that I've forgotten I was wearing it a few times when I stood up to walk away from my PC and had it yanked from my head! With other headsets they'd be broken or bent out of shape by now from falling asleep while wearing them. Not this one. The built in hinges in the middle of the headset and on each ear piece make it very forgiving.

My only complaint, and it is one I have with all headsets, is that in warm weather when your head tends to perspire, the earpiece coverings don't hold up well to the moisture. That's easily remedied with replaceable covers though.

Customer Review: This Headset Rocks!! Seriously...
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't generally write reviews, but this headset is worth mention.

Cons:

There is not doubt that the "plastic thing" (I don't know what it is) inline on the wire is bulky and the overall "size" of "entire package" makes you say...why? Also, the folding aspect of the headset is only marginally useful. All this makes the headset not very "traveler friendly". But when you consider the...

Pros:

The audio quality is simply amazing using iTunes on my MacBook Pro. It really, really rocks!! The headset clearly covers an extremely wide dynamic range...especially on the low end. I would not have expected this from a headset that is, well, this cheap!!

Works without a hitch on all of the online services that I use, Skype, MSN and iChat.

I have tried a number of "wireless" options (all bluetooth) and while there do indeed exist stereo headsets that will "do the job", the sacrifice you need to make in audio area is simply not worth it.

Overall, I really like this headset!! For travel purposes I went to my local Container Store and bought a plastic "sandwich box" which protects the headset quite nicely. For me, the size issues are overwhelmed by the audio quality and hence the 5 stars.

Customer Review: Bang for the buck? Amazing.
Summary: 5 Stars

I use this with Dragon Naturally Speaking. This is my 2nd unit. The 1st started showing wear after 6 years. No deep bass for games. Get the 500 model instead.

Works with Mac and Windows. I am told it works with Linux as well.

The down side is the long cord can get tangled. The mike wind screen falls off with almost no effort.

And the sound quality of the mike is great. Being USB based, the mike input isn't reduced by the electrical storm inside the PC case, which messes with the best sound cards on mike input. Most high end sound cards focus on output, not input.

IF you need high quality audio input, AND you want a traveling headset, look no further.

One more little down side. They have made some internal changes, so Windows thinks my OLD DSP-400 is different than my NEW DSP-400. I solved that by putting the old one on the Mac and leaving it there (after using silicon glue to keep it together).

At the price, just get a 2nd if you are going to travel with the headset. They take a solid beating (for a while). I have not been able to beat the DSP-400 no matter how much I have looked and tried other units.

Customer Review: I love love love this headset!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

In one year, this is my third headset. My first one had a microphone that stopped working every few days (usually mid-conversation), and the second was a horribly uncomfortable bulky thing & the cord snapped irreparably after only 2 months of use.

I've now had this headset for 2 months and it's been DELIGHTFUL. I can have skype conversations without worrying about whether or not people can hear me or wincing with discomfort. It's very, very comfortable and lightweight and it works perfectly for skype. The only complaint I have is that for some reason it does not work with my recording software, there's a neverending hum if I try. But I bought it for skype & I have another microphone for my recording software so that's really not a problem for me.

As for the long cord, I actually like that. My laptop died a while ago and so all of my skype calls are made from my home office... sometimes I like having conversations where I'm not sitting at my computer so I have an extension cord set up so that I can go sit on the living room couch and talk to my friends. This long cord lets me walk even farther than I could before.

Customer Review: Works well --> Plantronics DSP-400 Digitally-Enhanced USB Foldable Stereo Headset
Summary: 5 Stars

Works as advertised. Quality of sound very good. I use it with skype and dragon naturally speaking (DNS). With the latter, it picks up my voice very well. I like the fact that it folds nicely so it fits in my drawer, also the fact that it has a long cord. It's also great that I can increase/decrease volume in one move, w/o without actually having to use my mouse. Same with the mute button - particularly useful for me when using DNS. The headphones are comfortable, and not too tight. The adjustable head piece/band also works well. On the downside, it is a bit bulky, and it has no hard case, so if you plan to travel keep this in mind. The mouth piece locks in place at some point and you can't move it further down - this is a bit of a problem if you are trying to read something from a piece of paper that is on your desk. It blocks your view somewhat, but it's not really that big of a nuissance, and probably no one would notice unless you use DNS. These are very minor issues, though... Overall, it's a good product for a reasonable price. Would buy again.
