Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PLANEX WiFi USB Adapter for Online Game/Wireless LAN GW-US54Mini2W(White) designed in JapanCustomer Review: Planex USB Adapter works on Windows XP (32-bit) and 7 (64-bit) Summary: 5 Stars
I have two of these little adapters and yes, they were a struggle to get working, but in the end they both work perfectly.
Windows XP (32-bit): I had my doubts that this would work on a 10-year old computer updated to XP, but it actually worked. First I installed the driver on the CD, but that didn't work. Next I did an uninstall and reinstalled the updated driver: V 1.3.2.0 (2000 / XP) from the planex site. I was able to connect my Nintendo DS Lite without a problem.
Windows 7 (64-bit): Now, this one was the toughie. I must have installed the cd driver and websites' V 1.3.2.0 (2000 / XP) and V 3.1.5.0 (Vista) driver 4 times before I found out what to do. After lots of heartache and uninstalls I decided to give the Driver: V 1.3.0.0 (Windows Vista only) from the planex website a try. I assumed that Xlink Kia was a PSP/PS3 only thing, but this driver did the trick and now I am able to connect my Nintendo DS Lite.
Troubleshooting (Windows 7 - 64bit): At first my system wouldn't register the software driver with the USB dongle. I had to manually go in and update the driver. Right click 'My computer' and select properties. Then select device manager from the left side of the menu. You'll find the Planex USB in the Network Adapter group. Click it and go to the driver tab. Click on update driver and select 'Browse my computer for driver software'. The software will generally be located in this directory unless you changed it during installation C:\Program Files (x86)\Planex\GW-US54Mini2\Driver .Run the install and it should work. If you are connect by LAN (wired) network, set the LAN adapter to shared internet connection. To do this, go to control panel, network and sharing center, change adapter settings, right click LAN adapter, sharing tab, select 'Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection'. DO NOT select the other box 'Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection'.
After going through a series of other adapters, this is the first one that has worked for me. I'll be testing Vista (32-bit) sometime soon. Enjoy your new wifi!
Customer Review: An Apple + USB Wi-Fi Summary: 5 Stars
There have been reviews on what devices work and DON'T work with Apple computers, but I thought I'd add that this product works great!
This product worked great on my Mac, after a little configuring. If you're not computer savvy on setting perphierals up, then you might have a little trouble. Otherwise, this is an excellent product!
I hooked up up to my Mac, and it ran beautifully. To set it up, you simply go to Driver & Utility on the CD, then to for Mac, and open the disk image. Choose OS X 10.3 or 10.4 and install! Reboot and open Network preferences in System Preferences. Then, open the included utility that got placed in Applications--though it should open by itself. Make a profile in Network prefs and in the app, and double-click it in the app once you've set it up! That's it!
Under fifteen minutes, I got this totally hooked up with a 802.11g router, OS X 10.3, and on a Wi-Fi network that required a password, too! The connection hasn't dropped, and the reception is excellent--comparable to what you'd find on a netbook. I highly recommend it.
Customer Review: Masterpiece! Summary: 5 Stars
This I must admit is quality at its best.. For only under 21 dollars (could only be 17 depending on if the 2 day free shipping deal is still there) you get a very nice and useful wifi adaptar with both supported channels of g and b as well as 54mbits data transfer. The signal on it is very decent if not extrodinary and when used with x-link kai, works like a charm. If you want to use it for X-link kai, be advised that you will need to find instructions elsewhere, since the company will not support them directly!
Here is a link to a guide I found that should do the trick: [link removed]
(Before you use this, make sure you have the software for the wifi adapter installed properly with Windows Zero Configuration utility instead of using RaConfig, and enable the X-Link mode under Network Connections (right click Gw mini2 adapter and select properties -> click configure -> click advanced tab -> scroll down to find and enable it.)
Customer Review: Works with XLink Kai and PSP, Vista SP1 x64 Drivers (and maybe x86) do not work! Summary: 5 Stars
This item works great when being used on 32-bit XP, however I could not get this device to work on 64-bit Vista SP1. The Vista SP1 driver provided by Planex simply does not work as of July 28, 2008. This might be fixed in the future.
I did not try to install this device on Linux, but I have read reports that it is difficult.
Make sure to read the XLink Kai forums. They have tutorials on how to install and use this device under various system configurations. Do not follow their advice on force installing XP drivers for Vista SP1, this can (as in my case) permanently break the drivers for this device.
Customer Review: Works Great! Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this product to play Monster Hunter Freedom and other PSP games online that were unable to do more then ad-hoc in the past. Using the XLink Kai program this will let you play any game that does not have infrastructure with anyone else who uses XLink Kai in the world. As long as the game has some form of Ad-Hoc play, you'll love this product.
Definitely works great, with far less trouble/hassle then the WiFiMax counterpart.
Happy Gaming
