Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PEC-PAD Lint Free Wipes 4"x4" 100per/PkgCustomer Review: Great little wipes Summary: 5 Stars
Back when I had a cheap little camera and no additional equipment, I used whatever I had on hand to clean and wipe. As my photographic equipment has gotten more sophisticated, numerous, and expensive, it is important to me to use the right product to keep everything clean and not inflict damage on my expensive glass surfaces. These little pads are easy to carry around, I use it to clean both ends of my lenses each time I change; to wipe off any marks on my filters, to clean slides and old photos before scanning them (if using them alone isn't enough, I use the Pec-12 archival photographic emulsion cleaner) but often using them alone is sufficient to get finger marks off.
The only thing I would change is the packaging. The virtue of these little pads (besides being non-abrasive) is that they are lint-free. Once the package of 100 is open, how do you protect the remainder from acquiring environmental lint or dust? (I wrap the whole block in aluminum foil, but that's a bit of a hassle). I wish they would sell the set of 100 in 5 individually-wrapped sets of 20. That way, while you are using 1 set, the remainder remains sealed and you can take only one or two little packages when traveling. I've tried opening only a side of the package, but they don't come out smoothly the way single Kleenex would. But, other than that, you want to have these little pads to protect your camera and lens investments.
Customer Review: They say not recommended, but I say works wonderfully well cleaning digital camera sensor Summary: 5 Stars
I frequently setup model portfolio photo shoots using a digital camera. The worst thing about a a digital SLR is getting debris and dust on the sensor. This results from either changing lenses or attaching a lens that is already dirty.
There are some mighty expensive tools available to clean the sensor or you can pay a camera house to do it. I initially purchased a kit just for cleaning the sensor that came with swabs, a manual air blower, and these specially shaped wands that you use to wipe off the sensor. They worked fairly well, but I used them up quite quickly (dozen wands). Each wand costs about $2 or so when determining the overall costs of the kit.
I purchased these Pec-Pads on a whim and a prayer that I could somehow manage to create my own wands. It worked. I use the same plastic wands from the kit I originally purchased, take a Pec-Pad, cut it into halves and form the pad around the wand while using the same small rubber band that came with the wand to secure the pad.
Awesome. No lint, no fuzzies.
I paid like $15 for the Pec-Pads plus shipping was like some crazy price of $6.95 but overall I have about 90 Pads left after a year so well worth it. Plus they are great for cleaning the lens and camera parts as well. The manufacturer says to not use them on camera sensors, but I do and I will continue to do so.
Customer Review: A product that does just what it says Summary: 5 Stars
PEC-PADs are small squares of paper useful for cleaning lenses, mirrors, scanner/copier beds, etc. They are soft and essentially lint free. To my knowledge, no paper or cloth is absolutely lint free so if you, like another reviewer, go looking for fibers with a jeweler's loupe you'll probably find some. Fortunately, if they are so small they can only be seen under significant magnification, they will cause you no image degradation.
I do encourage users to keep the opened packages in a clean, dust-free environment such as a small plastic food container. If dust settles on the pads it can be transferred to the lens. In fact, it is quite easy to pick up some grit from any number of sources, including the glass surface, itself, and then abrade the lens inadvertently. In other words, " ultra soft and lint-free" refers to the virgin pads and should not lead one to a false sense of security.
My only other objection is the obscenely high price. That, alas, is to be expected with specialty items of this type. Buy from Amazon or a reliable internet seller such as Adorama or BH and you'll save money over camera store prices.
In short, a good product that performs exactly as described.
Customer Review: price is a bit high but they work great. Summary: 5 Stars
I'm an amateur photog and was having trouble using the usual lens cleaning cloths to keep my lenses truly clean. They work great to get a spot of dust off, but if you accidently get some finger grease on the lens the microfiber aren't great and there's a chance to scratch the lens if a piece of mean dust gets stuck in it(which I did). After scratching a lens I had to find a better way and in came pec pads. They work absolutely fantastic and are perfect size. I keep about 5 in little zip lock bags to that I don't contaminate them all every time I want to use them. I use a drop of butyl alcohol and a pec pad and everything comes out great. After scratching the focusing plane in a previous camera with a so called scratch free swab I'm terrified to touch anything inside the camera but I'm sure these would work.
Customer Review: PEC-PAD Lint Free Wipes are "on the spot" Summary: 5 Stars
When I first saw these advertised, I was somewhat wary. Now that I have them in hand, I can say that these wipes are very effective and useful on optics and other critical surfaces. They should always be used with a proper cleaning fluid. "Spit" is not a proper cleaning fluid. I have no trepidation about using PEC-PADS on my expensive camera lenses. I have not yet tried them on photographic emulsions, however. These pads are not "cheap", neither in quality nor price. I'll pay the price when I am assured that the product works and does no damage.
