Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips SHL9500 Lightweight Premium Headband Headphones

Customer Review: 2 YEARS IN REVIEW--please read
Summary: 5 Stars

At around Christmas in 2007 I bought these with a gift card for Amazon. I am writing this review as I have just (sadly) come to find that my pair of 9500s have just met their demise (totally my fault, the wire was hanging down and I carelessly stepped on it jerking the split wires...) Anyways, I have wanted to write a review on these for the longest time and never got around to doing it. I suppose now is a better time than any.

First, I would like to point out the sound quality and it is simply incredible. To ensure you that your musical taste will be covered by these you should know that I listen to a wide range of music (from Chopin piano, to gangsta rap i.e. NWA, Da Lench Mob, Dr. Dre; to death metal i.e. The Black Dahlia Murder, Veil of Maya, Opeth, Ensiferum, Taake; to Indie/Post Rock i.e. Gatsby's American Dream, Mogwai, Winston Audio, Of Montreal, Coldplay, the Dear Hunter; to modern rap i.e. Jay-Z, Kanye, Kid Cudi, Afrob; to Progressive Vocal i.e. Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Dean Martin; to Progressive Predecessors i.e. Elton John, Billy Joel, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Harry Nilsson, The Beatles (of course); to Electronic i.e. Ulver, Crystal Method, Portishead, Slowpho; and several several more but you get the idea). This is to show that no matter what you listen to, these headphones have absolutely no bias towards any genre or sound. The price to quality ratio in this matter is completely unbalanced (in a good way). The frequency range is also incredible. They pick up and amplify the low and high end sounds alike. So if you're listening to high production material, bass frequencies predominately stand out, and ARE NOT DISTORTED by any means (although this will, to an extent, vary depending on the output device (audio player) you're using). Another great feature is that these do a pretty damn good job of blocking sound for not being labeled as noise blocking headphones. GREAT SOUND.

Second, the dependability/durability/portability is also overwhelming. I have unintentionally put these through a rather heinous stress test. The most incredible thing that happened was that a few months after I got them, I put them in my school locker and accidentally slammed the door on the L jack portion. When I returned a few hours later I opened my lock and noticed that the entire jack area looked like it was smashed and I thought that they broke. However, when I plugged them in they worked perfectly and the smashed appearance was no more as the "rubber" had basically absorbed the "impact" and pretty much reinflated for lack of a better term. In addition, they have been dropped a countless number of times, stepped on, tossed carelessly, and crushed in suitcases and backpacks. Also, the collapsible capability is very convenient as these will fit virtually anywhere, including pants pockets if necessary. AMAZING DURABILITY/PORTABILITY.

Third, is the comfortableness which the ONLY THING that is not superb about these. The thing is that these are not the most comfortable headphones but they are not uncomfortable either. They fit fine on my head and ears, and the material contacting your ear is very comfortable as well. The only thing that I would say is uncomfortable is that after having them on for like an hour or so, your ear(s) might get sore. But DO NOT let that minor detail give you doubts about these. I just felt it was necessary to mention comfort as it is something that everyone looks for when looking for headphones and no one wants uncomfortable headphones.

These could have lasted a much longer time if it weren't for my carelessness. Again, in no way was it a flaw of the headphones which resulted in their "braking." The phones were around my neck, the cord had fallen as it wasn't attached to anything and reached the ground, I incidentally stepped on the end of the cord, went to move my head and that's about it. This is also something that I have done a countless number of times and this was just too much torque I guess. But one of the best things about these was the length of the cord. It was long enough to conveniently place your audio "production" anywhere reasonably without complications. For instance, if you were at your computer and needed to move around. Also, the cord is not so long that you always have a bunch of unnecessary slack around.

When I bought these they were around $25. I cannot believe they are taking another $15 dollars off the price. It sounds like Philips paid me to write all of this but seriously these are just freaking fantastic. I have used these for the last two years through High School and College and they have taken a rough "beating" and worked as good now as the day I received them without any complications. If you are contemplating buying these but are worried that the price will reflect the quality, it does not. You will certainly not be disappointed, I guarantee it.
