Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips DVP642 DivX-Certified Progressive-Scan DVD PlayerCustomer Review: An excellent buy to play your DivX collection with ease Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this DVD player a few days ago and have been nothing but pleased by its performance. It is a great deal for what you get: a stylish and attractive design, complete audio/video outputs (s-video, digital/optical audio, analog, etc.), full DVD player capabilities, and most of all, the ability to play DivX/Xvid (MPEG-4). I've tested all kinds of media with this player and have been thoroughly satisfied. I viewed some high quality DivX-compressed movies on CD-R's in outstanding clarity without a hitch, played mp3 cds (not many features but OK), and watched DVDs (if you're clever you can even make the player region-free). There's already a firmware upgrade for the player which expands its capabilities to support subtitle files (srt, sub, smi) alongside media files. It was a quick and easy process to upgrade the firmware, and I tested many DivX movies with subtitles and they worked fine. Hopefully in a future firmware upgrade they'll upgrade the menu system, which I found a bit clumsy. I have two issues concerning the playback MPEG-4 files: occasionally, a movie file encoded with less popular audio codec (like OGG or PCM) will be silent; also, you can only rewind/fast forward at 8x and you cannot skip to a specific time in the movie. Overall, this player is extremely capable and is a GREAT deal for its price. I'd strongly recommend it.
Customer Review: The Best Dvd Player on the Market Summary: 5 Stars
I give the Phillips DVP642 DVD player five stars this is an exceptional electronic device and is easy to use and affordable. This product allows for multimedia fun and only costs $62.99. It is very easy to store and easy to handle. I really enjoyed this DVD because it plays every kind of CD you can think of like DVD videos, audio CD, JPEG image CD, video CD, MP3 CD, & MPEG-4. This product made my picture very clear and was flicker free with its high-definition. The thing I enjoyed best is that it came with many free accessories some that I use are the case, cables, and one year replacement plan.
The most exceptional thing about this DVD player is that it can convert European region formatted discs for viewing in our home theatres; this is a feature that many DVD players cannot do and was one reason I choice to buy it.
When I compared this Phillips product with the Samsung DVD5500 that costs $26.01 more I found that the Phillips comes with more accessories whereas the Samsung only comes with a one year replacement plan. The Samsung also does not have high-resolution and does not convert European DVD's but costs more.
If you are looking for a DVD player that plays different kinds of CD's and is easy to handle I suggest you go with the Phillips DVP642 because you will be happy with your investment.
Customer Review: Greatest thing since sliced bread Summary: 5 Stars
Prior to obtaining this animal I had to do a lot of ripping or be satisfied with viewing on the laptop. Reading other reviews I was not sure if I was going to have to press a bunch of buttons or something to not only look at different regions or how the PAL easy going to display on NTSC TV's.
All the worry was unnecessary a note in the box said that the system had been adjusted by a technician before shipping. Sure enough all I did was plug and play. I was worried that the picture quality would not be the best. I do not have high definition but the picture is just fine.
I had a marathon playing all my favorite films:
She [1965] ASIN: B00005NMWA Amazon UK Region 0
Blott On The Landscape [1985] ASIN: B0007ZD6VS Amazon UK Region 2
The Ascent Of Man ASIN: B000772842 Amazon UK Region 2
Charlie Chan Collection ASIN: B0008JIHXA Amazon UK Box set, PAL Region 2
Viktor und Viktoria (1933) ASIN: B0009NSAR8 Amazon.de Format: Dolby, HiFi Sound, PAL Sprache: Deutsch
Now that the world has opened up to me the list will grow. I have heard that this animal will not last but a year under continual use; if so it is well worth it, however to hedge on this I still have another player hooked up parallel for the region 1 DVD's.
I intend to buy another for the second TV.
Customer Review: The only review you need to read Summary: 5 Stars
Don't listen to the people that complain that the remote control is too small or useless or that the picture quality is "average" or anything.
I do agree, some products might arrive dead or non-working, etc. That's just the luck of the draw. You can't rate a DVD player just because it broke on you. If my DVD had arrived like that, I would have exchanged it and be done with it. However, if it had not performed to my expectations, then I would have given it a bad review.
Ok, now that we got that out of the way.
The DVD works perfect. It plays ANY format. I was a little concerned the manual doesn't specify this but forget the manual. It plays everything. I got it yesterday and I tested DVD's from England, Germany, Brazil, Singapore and Mexico. All worked. The one thing you might have to do and I did it for mine, is enter the "region free" code. That is no hassle at all.
The picture quality is great and I played it on my 50inch Sony Grand Wega and it looks very nice. I mean, if you have a George Lucas complex and you want the video to be VIRTUAL REALITY QUALITY, then you definately need something for that specific purpose.
I HIGHLY recommend it if you are a DVD collector and often buy DVD's from all over the world. This is your machine!
Customer Review: Philips DVP642 - Great Player @ a Great Price Summary: 5 Stars
I Love this DVD player.
It plays everything I've put in it.
For example, an AVI file that I burnt of Underworld and a VCD that I had of Underworld Evolution. It also plays audio DVD's (as MP3's).Plus, you can make it ignore region codes.
That being said.....
the remote could be laid out better. I am forever hitting chapter forward by accident, then having to skip back and fast forward to where I was in the movie.
AND...
the menu for displaying a directory on a burnt disc with multiple files only allows eleven characters, ie.12345678901.
This may not be a problem for everyone, but if you burn an MP3 DVD with lots of files with similar names you can't tell which one is which unless you play the file.
ALSO.....
lots of the reviews I've read on the Philips DVP642 advise that the player breaks easily. I haven't had a problem.... yet.
I suggest buying the ten dollar one year extended warranty, just in case.
Lastly....
this DVD player is firmware upgradeable (if you don't know what that means this won't matter to you anyway), but Philips doesn't provide updates very often, at least for this model.
All in all though, I would recommend this player to friends and plan on buying another one myself, unless I find a better model than this one.
