Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips DVP642 DivX-Certified Progressive-Scan DVD Player

Customer Review: a counter to some of the negative reviews
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't review this item because I purchased a different model but I just wanted to say that this type of DVD player is a Region 1 player that has been MODIFIED to play DVDs from all regions. Mine came with the original manual FROM THE MANUFACTURER that says it is a Region 1 player because that is how they made and sold it. The All Region players were later modified by another agent to recognize all codes and then "re-sold" to you. (And, because they have been modified, they do not come under the manufacturer's warranty.) My player came in its original box with ONLY A SMALL STICKER ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX saying it had been modified. I set it up as instructed, put in a Region 2 DVD and it played perfectly (but NOWHERE IN THE MANUFACTURER'S MANUAL does it say it will do so). (It also plays Region 1 fine - I haven't tried other regions yet.) I don't know if these reviewers who say they received the wrong model, or it doesn't work, actually set them up and tried to play a non-Region 1 DVD, or merely looked at the box and/or the manual and decided from those cues that it was. (Of course, some of these customers may have accidentally been sent an unmodified player.)
Also, don't confuse All Region or Region-Free with Multi-Format.
Basically, if you are sure you ordered an All Region player, look for a small sticker on the box or somewhere and try out the machine first before concluding you were sent the wrong version.

Customer Review: Great player !!! I love it - plays everything...
Summary: 5 Stars

This player really plays everything you load in - movies, music, pictures from DVDs or CDs. The movies can be all regions - PAL and NTSC. That means movies from Europe will play with no problem. A friend of mine gave me "Blake 7" -a movie form UK on a DVD, but it would not play in my old Panasonic DVD player, because it was PAL DVD. With the Philips plays great right away without the need for conversion ! It plays MP3s burned on a DVD - that means 4.7 GB of music or in other words - 4700 minutes in MP3 format of custom selected music !!! That means over 2 days and a half without stopping, without ever repeating a piece !!!! Way cool ! I burn those DVDs from my favourite playlists on iTunes. It really plays all your music - weather is in MP3 or regular audio CD format. It playes all your videos that you had burned from your digital camera on a CD along with the pictures... That means you can share all your memories form your trip. It is a great feature... Actually on one CD/DVD you can have different data - favourite photos, music, home videos and movies and it will play it all. You can browse through a menu and play whatever you wish without a need for conversion to VCD or SVCD ever - just burn the data CD or DVD with music, videos, pictures, .AVI files compressed with DivX technology... It can also play jpg picture slide shows with random transitions...
Bottom line it will play it all.

Great value !

Customer Review: Great Player at an Absurdly Low Price
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this player strictly for its Divx capabilities and quickly found that it provides a better picture than the other more expensive players that I have at home. Don't get me wrong, this is not a high end Denon player, but for the price of a couple of DVDs, what more can you ask for? So far I have been able to play discs of every variety. There is not a format I have found at home that this player will not handle. Downloaded Divx programming burned to DVDRs look crisp, clean, beautiful, and vibrant. I'm not sure why the reviewer below had a problem with DVDR, as I have recorded all of my Divx programming on DVDR and have had no problem. I would suggest using quality blank media. I personally use Fuji discs and have been able to play them on any device I have tried. Music from CDs and CDRs sounds great through the optical connection to my A/V receiver. The menu functions are pretty arcane, but simple enough to do the job without cluttering the screen. The build is adequate and attractive. The slim profile and light weight allowed me to stack it on top of my DirecTV Tivo unit in an already cramped AV rack. It has a full complement of connects including RCA, S-Video, composite, optical, and even coaxial audio. The remote is pretty ho-hum but works fine Overall I have been very impressed by this little machine. It's impressive ability to play almost everything and sexy looks make it a real winner.

Customer Review: No more watching all of your video files on your PC only!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best DVD player so far for watching video files on your TV. I've been looking for a DVD player like this for several years now and bought it for the price only, not reading the little print about DIVX and other video files. The player is nice and compact has a silvery brushed metal look that we see on new cell phones and new car dashboards nowadays.

Most of the features are what you expect from a player in this price range. The remote is a nice size but for some reason most all manufactures make remotes too small. The absence of an eject button is kinda suprising but if you are taking a DVD out, you are going to be getting up anyway. One of the very few complaints about this unit is that the power shuts off sometimes when you hit the stop button!

Overall a great little player for the price and a MUST HAVE for those with video files on their PC's. What a wonderful ability to play a compressed movie on a 700 MB CD-R with very good picture quality. I always thought the inexpensive APEX machines were good but this Phillips unit will play CD-R without having to be encoded with nero or some other software. Just burn them to CD-R or DVD and play. This unit also plays DVD+R and DVD-R withouth any problems! Get this great machine if you have DIVX, MPEG, AVI, and WMV video files and you are tired of watching them on your PC!

Customer Review: Best DVD/DivX Player (for the price!)
Summary: 5 Stars

The Philips DVP642 is truly superb at its price point. DVD playback is just as good as my older Onkyo DV-SP501 (at more than twice the price) and it can play DivX and XviD files (at almost DVD quality) as well as MP3's JPEG's and VCD's!

Unlike the experience of the reviewer from Erie, PA, my player does resume playing the DVD from the scene where you've pressed the stop button (of course if you press stop TWICE it will take you to the beginning of the DVD).

The unit is ultra thin (1.7" high) and stylish. Colors are vivid at its default setting but you have the option to tweak them if you deem necessary via a system menu, a feature that Philips calls SmartPicture. Video output is available for component video, SVideo or CVBS. For audio you have digital or analog output. You also have an option to set the video for your type of monitor 4:3 P/S, 4:3 Widescreen or 16:9. You may zoom in during playback on both DVD or DivX/XviD files. Resolution

The one weakness I can find is with the remote. It is a bit skimpy, for example, no dedicated open/close tray button, instead one must press the stop key for about 5 seconds which will either open or close the tray. Buttons are small and placed close together. If anyone knows of a universal remote that works with this unit please include it in your review.

Overall this player has far exceeded my expectations. Well done Philips!
