Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips DVP5982 HDMI 1080p DivX Ultra DVD PlayerCustomer Review: I couldn't imagine a better player Summary: 5 Stars
For the last 5 months this player has played one or two discs per day, sometimes more. I haven't found anything it wouldn't play. I've had everything from Sony's to dollar store garbage and none of them ever play for any great length of time.
Save yourself a lot of aggravation and a lot of money, at this price it may be one of the better deals on Amazon - you can't go wrong with this one.
I'm here to buy another one for a different room.
Customer Review: Excellent DVD Player Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD player plays DVDs from any region. Definitely use it with an HDMI cable. With HDMI and HD TV, the player does a great job of upconverting the picture to high definition. DVDs look great. This is a great deal. I would definitely recommend buying this.
Customer Review: Great product! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this product the Phillips Multi Region Code free DVD player because I have leagally purchased DVD's from several countries and I have found that it plays all of them.
Customer Review: not as awesome as XBMC, chokes on H.264 AVC high Summary: 4 Stars
Reads acceptable well from high quality USB flash drives like Corsair and Lexar.
NOT a suitable replacement for an xbox with Xbox Media Center.
NOT a front end for NAS.
*** Will NOT play x264 / H.264 videos. ***
Upscaling is nice if one has high quality HDMI cables.
There are many bugs with the most current firmware related to playback of other than DVD video. Don't expect another firmware release. One will likely be invited to purchase the next hardware iteration.
Easy Region Free is a plus.
It is slow to complete power up. Slow to recognize no DVD in tray, then slow to decide to poll USB. Once high quality USB flash device detected no transfer rate hiccups. It is slow to eject the DVD drive. Stopping stand alone media files is VERY slow sometimes requiring mashing stop half a dozen times.
Of the other brands of set top stand alone media file players sporting USB ports we've tested this one was the least annoying.
If one requires MUCH better responsiveness and the ability to play 99% of available formats XBMC on windows/linux is still the best choice.
do not pay more than 15 over half a Franklin. 20 for shipping is OUTRAGEOUS.
I returned mine to the amazon vendor for retard-level shipping: retail box tossed in the mail. I bought one from a membership wholesale club for less than half a Franklin.
IF the item does not arrive with padding on ALL six box surfaces I reject this shippment -- you should too.
update: 090811
'find' the alternative firmware to address many of the sluggish issues and overcome the ridiculous filename length display problem.

Customer Review: UPDATED REVIEW: Uber-Satisfied... however there are a few downsides Summary: 4 Stars
After using this product almost every day now for about a year now (updated original review Apr. 2010), I'd have to conclude that I am very satisfied in the quality, features, and durability of this DVD player. The picture quality is robust and sharp, the controls are logical and intuitive, and it's ultra quiet and sleek. The fact that this player has a flash drive is one of the main reasons why I went with this model. This is a very handy feature so one can watch upscaled AVI files on their TV without having to author/burn a DVD first.
There are a few downsides to this player however. I don't care for the way the player handles subtitles. The font is white over an opaque background and there are no options for font size, type, position, or anything. Also, there's a long lag time between hitting open for the tray and that actually occurring. So the response time for some of the controls lags, but this is only slightly annoying.
I also discovered what Philips does NOT tell you when it comes to playing AVI files (burned to DVD or watched from a flash drive). The MAXIMUM play-time is 4 hours, 20 minutes (approx.). This is approximately a 2 Gb file. At this point, the AVI will cut off and not finish. The fix for this of course is to split the larger AVI files. I'm wondering how Philips could exclude this from their Instructions considering how important this feature is.
I originally rated this player a 5, but have downgraded it to a 4/5 considering these fairly minor downsides.
