Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD Player

Customer Review: Great machine at a great price! Now plays all region DVDs!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this machine for myself as a Christmas present. It arrived TWO days after I ordered it (using the free shipping option). The set up was simple - plug in and go (I did read the instructions). It plays DVDs (of course) but it also plays CDs/DVDs with jpegs on them in a slideshow format. It also accepts USB input (from a memory stick) and plays music and jpegs from there as well.

The best bit is that I found a DVD region hack so that it plays all region code DVDs, so I can watch my US and European format DVDs whenever I want to!

Here are the steps I followed:
Hold the Stop key on the remote to Open the DVD tray
press Setup
select Preference
Press 1,3,8,9,3,1
Press up/down key to select "0

Easy - Enjoy!

Customer Review: Amazing DVD images and more
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this DVD player to use with my new HD LCD TV with 1080p. The quality of the picture is about as good as HD from a regular DVD. In addition this player accepts all formats of CD's that I have and all formats of jpeg, wmv, mp3, etc on any CD, DVD or USB drive. The only glitch I could find, and it might be with the TV and not the player, is the screen format switches periodically between wide screen and full screen on some movies. I did not plan my purchase well, however. After I bought the DVD player I looked at some home theater packages, and all of them came with DVD players, including Philips, which has an upscaling player. So, if you are not going to get a home theater, but want to watch DVD's using your TV's 1080p capability, then this player is the one to get.

Customer Review: GREAT PLAYER!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a GREAT player. I can't say anything about upconverting, I'm still shopping for a HDTV, but it's really good at

a) playing international DVDs (regional hack works like a charm and PAL to NTSC conversion is automatic);
b) playing .avi files (out of 100+ files I've only had a problem with one - no sound).

It also has a very nice feature. If you stop in the middle of the movie, the next time you turn the DVD on, it will start right at the place you left off last time (it will also give you an option to go back to the beginning). Moreover, it can remember more than one DVD. For example, take the disk out, play something else, get back to the first disk, it will again start where you left off. No more 'scene selection' crap. :)

Customer Review: The best player for Divx files
Summary: 5 Stars

This thin and siver DVD player is not just for DVD but also MP3/Divx. I was searching for Divx player and checked reviews of such ones. This model was chosen by me: 1. Thin and light 2. Simple to use 3. Clean video quality 4. Most of all, it has a USB port on the front panel. If I have a Divx file to watch, I just copy it on a USB memory stick and insert in on the port. If you watch movies made avi file on a computer, this is what you need. When you watch it on TV via this product, its video quality is much better like a dvd quality. But, it is not perfect. 90-95% of files with extended name of "avi" recognized. When a file is not playalbe, "Codec" error message shows up. Also, files with extended name of asf,wm, wvx and so on are not recognized by this product.

Customer Review: Impressed
Summary: 5 Stars

We have been impressed with this Samsung Upscaling DVD. Some of the other reviews his it on the head, the remote is a bit wussy; but does everything it needs to do. I still haven't been able to get my master remote to run it to consolidate, but the improvement on picture quality is great and ease of use through HDMI made it a perfect match for my Sony surround sound. Only downsides that I've had from it in the past two years from it is the time it takes to activate and read discs, and sometimes the picture will come through with no sound (but that could be my surround sound too). Regardless, with patients and disconnecting the HDMI cable from time to time, this has been a heck of a buy.
