Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD PlayerCustomer Review: Great Picture Quality, Feature-Packed and Dirt Cheap!! Summary: 5 Stars
I was about to buy an Oppo 970HD when I heard about this new Philips player. Found it for $69, so I took a chance. I'm glad I did.
PROS: cheap, upconverts to 1080p, HDMI output, very good picture quality (Mediatek chipset), black finish, slim design, plays everything (including NTSC/PAL), USB 2.0 port (media must be formatted as FAT32/16), plays divx files, supports Dolby-Digital and DTS passthru (even though it isn't mentioned in the manual), adjustable audio sync, easily hackable to be region free, screen saver, firmware upgrades.
CONS: doesn't support long file names, doesn't support HD divx files, no optical audio out (only coax/rca), remote is kind of cheap, menus are a little cludgy, doesn't seem to have an "upconversion-over-component" hack available yet (unlike the DVP5960).
To sum up, if you don't need optical out and can get around the annoyance of short file names, this player is terrific! Who knows, maybe Philips will release a firmware to fix these minor issues (fingers crossed).
BTW, if you add a FAT32 formatted HD, it becomes a pretty decent poor man's home theater PC. A BIG thumbs up from me!!
Customer Review: Flawless DVD player with extras Summary: 5 Stars
This is a nice DVD player with great options for its money.
+) It allows to playback DL DVDs, a true plus!
+) Slightly scratched/dusty/finger-printed DVDs are also no problem for this player.
+) A nice feature is the device's capability to remember the position of a DVD playback session, which gets stored on the device itself (not sure how standard that is these days). Even when playing other DVDs, the player remembers that particular DVD's last playback position - and behold, when inserted again, the player continues to play from that position! I was awed... but again, not sure how standard that feature is.
+) The quality of the movies are superb thanks to 1080P up-scaling (via HDMI), nice to look at with a 52" HDTV.
+) The player itself has a very small form factor (very, very flat!) but still has a standard stereo-device footprint (makes it easy to stack). Even if not stacked, the player features a polished black surface, that blends in nicely with most TVs.
Overall, we're very happy with the player. Look for specials!
Customer Review: Does the job and more!! Summary: 5 Stars
I picked this model up at the local Best Buy to use with my new 46" Samsung 720p DLP. In short, this player does what it's advertised super well. I was initially going to buy a less expensive Zenith upconverting player for $55. But when I saw this model had the USB drive to play downloaded movies without having to burn them onto DVD's, I was sold!!
I can't comment on how well it upconverts to 1080p, since my tv's native resolution is 720p, but the picture quality is simply many levels above what I'm used to seeing at standard resolution. In fact, after having watched "Gladiator" in upconverted 720p mode thru HDMI, watching it again in standard resolution thru the RCA hookups looked like watching streaming video clips off the internet!!! It's that much of a difference.^^
I haven't tried out the hack a previous reviewer posted to open up the region restrictions on this model, but I will soon. It'll be great to see foreign-bought dvd's on the same machine.
Customer Review: Great Picture Conversion and a Few Things They don't Make clear Summary: 5 Stars
When I purchased this I was not sure it was going to work with my TV. I want to let those with 1080i max HDTV's that it lets you set it for your set. The menus can be a bit tricky until you get familiar. As a quick clue when you hit set up on the remote you need to use the right arrow to access the Video menu. You need to set the 1080i there or your SD DVD's will not upcovert. Once you get that done ENJOY! I couldn't believe my JAG DVD's in HD, WOW. I highly recommend using an HDMI cable. This is a great unit for the money.
I find the remote just fine, others think it doesn't weigh enough. It is straight forward and easy to use what a pleasant surprise.
The customer help line is great and quickly answered my question and had me up and running in 5 min.
My only complaint is the power cord is a bit short, I had to use an extension as my media center long. Aside from that it is great. If anything changes soon I will update my review.
Customer Review: Awesome Summary: 5 Stars
To go along with my HDTV purchase, I decided to get an upconverting DVD player. I didn't seek out this one for any reason, except that it was inexpensive and I thought the USB port sounded cool.
Wow, it is awesome. Standard DVDs look great. It displays videos great in 16x9. No complaints for DVDs.
However, the best part about it is the USB port. I copied a video file from my computer onto a thumb drive and plugged it in. It worked great - even upconverted my AVI and displayed it 16x9. No concern about codecs or encoding schemes - no problems at all. The USB port is a fantastic feature.
This is a great product. The only concern I have is that the menuing system is a bit difficult to use. I found it tough to figure out how to navigate - it is a bit non-intuitive. However, given the good features of this DVD player, and the low price, I can hardly fault Phillips at all. This is a great product.
