Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD PlayerCustomer Review: Unbelievable Value Summary: 5 Stars
Heard about this DVD player from a buddy who bought one for his 64" TV and loved it. My brother's player crapped out after 7 years and so I got one for his 46" Sony LCD Proj, and went ahead and nabbed one for myself and my 42" Sony LCD Proj.
Setup was simple using HDMI, and menus are simple and intuitive. I only needed a quick scan of the manual to get my bearings and to make sure I understood everything. At first I set it on Auto, but I'm not 100% sure that it works as you'd like it to. First couple of things I watched (2003 WSOP DVD & Blades of Glory) were definitely better than my old standard DVD player, but didn't blow me away. I figured the player was doing the best it could with them since I set it on Auto. Then I stuck in Transformers one afternoon and a little ways in decided to see what it was running at. Well I'm pretty sure it was 480p, because I had to hit the button on the face of the player 3 or 4 times to force it to 1080i (the highest my TV supports) and WOW what a world of difference. Its certainly not legitimate HD quality, but for a $60 upconvert DVD player, its pretty mind blowing. I'd say its probably about 85-90% as good as pure HD quality. I am just a guy who loves HD and by no means a videophile, so this player is plenty satisfying to me until I decide to take the plunge into HD DVD. Don't hesitate to purchase.
Customer Review: Very impressed!! Summary: 5 Stars
I've only had this player for about a week, and so far I love it.
Yes, the only difference between this and the 5960 is the 1080p upconversion, but that's a pretty major addition if you ask me. The 5982 is cheaper than the 5960 anyway, so you might as well get the 5982 even if you don't have a 1080p TV yet.
But I do have a 1080p TV, and if you do as well, this is definitely the one to get. The upgrade in picture quality over a standard DVD player is instantly noticable. Your standard DVDs will look fresher immediately; you definitely will notice the difference in resolution. Of course, your DVDs won't look as good as Blu-Ray disks, but that isn't to be expected from *any* up-converting player.
At around $70, the price on this player can't be beat. A 1080p upconverter for $70???!!? Are you kidding me??!?! Amazing! A few months ago you had to pay over $200 for this capability!
I also love that this can be made into a universal region-free player with a few button presses on the remote. The code is readily available on the Internet. I recently purchased a set of Region 2 DVDs from the UK, and once I put the 5982 into Region 0 (region-free) mode, the DVDs play no problem.
I highly recommend the Philips DVP5982. You just can't beat this level of quality and this feature set at the price!
Customer Review: Inshallah, you get what you pay for - on a good day! Summary: 5 Stars
This Philips DVD player was bought to replace an earlier version purchased almost 3 years ago. That model finally went psycho, doing many weird things during playback, such as suddenly deciding there was "no disc", etc. Perhaps a diet of daily power interruptions, rather dusty environs, and occassional extremes of arid heat and chilly dampness accelerated its demise.
This newer model is not coded for, nor have I a code to make it, "all regions" unlike the programming I found for the old one. Still if only NTSC & PAL discs are in your collection, it does the job just fine. The white remote is a color choice that will show dirt very soon, but the DVD unit itself is great, is thin so it fits in tight cabinets on top of the TV, looks good, and was delivered VERY quickly at a 'great value' price. Not over-loaded with 'lookit my new toy' bells and whistles that nearly no one uses, but still not as intuitive as the older model. No matter, having had the first one, had no hesitation to buy this as a replacement, and will likely go back for a similar model when this one finally dies.
I could not test the up-converting feature as my multi-zone/multi-voltage tv is not HDTV capable, so I have no such discs in my collection at this time. All said and done? BUY IT!!! The Amazon price is again excellent, as was the service. - JS
Customer Review: Awesome upconvert dvd player! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased one of these dvd upconvert players and I am very impressed. Most upconvert dvd players are a bit pricey but this one is pretty ood for its features. I tested the upconvert to 1080p with Transformers (2007) and it looked really good, granted its not blu-ray quality. I have this dvd player connected to my Panasonic 46PZ85U 1080p Plasma TV.
Divx feature works nicely as well. This dvd player played most of the divx files I threw at it when I tested it. The picture quality still looked lovely. However, there were some cases were the divx movie's resolution would not be playable on this dvd player. I only tested AVI movie files since most of my movies are in that format.
The remote is pretty simple. I'm used to the remote since it pretty much is the same as most of the other Philips dvd player remotes. The response does lag at times but that isn't a major problem for me. I haven't gotten to tinker with the region=free settings on the player since I hardly watch any foreign movies.
Philips has been a good brand to me and it continues to be one with this dvd upconvert player. I would highly recommend this player to those who are looking for a really good upncoverting dvd player for an affordable price. You will not be disappointed!
Customer Review: $50 for a 1080p upconversion Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great upconversion dvd player to get until the format wars are over. Why spend $300 on an hd-dvd if the standard is going to be blu-ray?
for those of you that want a dvd player that upconverts dvds this is what you should get.
The biggest benefit of this dvd player is the usb connection port. after ripping your dvds, you can simply copy them onto an external harddrive, hook it up to the dvd player via the usb, and play your back ups.
i have a 750Gb maxtor hooked up with no problems.
however, ntfs isnt supported, so you will need to format the harddrive in fat32.
the only trade off made with the usb port, is the lack of optical out. this really hurts this system. but its $50.
the worst part about this dvd player is the remote. simply HORRID. The remote was engineered so both the front and back had the exact same shape. Kinda hard to do anything on a disc when you dont realize youre pointing the remote at yourself instead of the dvd player.
the setup buttons are much more prevalent then the actual usable buttons. it makes no sense to have tiny play/rewind buttons, yet huge menu buttons.
definetly pair this with quality programmable remote.
