Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips 6.5-Inch Digital Picture Frame (Wood)

Customer Review: Happy with product with two exceptions:
Summary: 4 Stars

From reviews on Amazon, this digital picture frame is said to have excellent picture quality and indeed it has met my expectations. I like how the pictures from memory cards can change almost instantly in the no effects mode without having the picture slowly displayed line-by-line. And those are 7.1 MP photos on a SD card! With effects enabled in slideshow mode, the transitions can be random and they are are very acceptable, no complains there either.

The two exceptions I mentioned in the subject are:
1. The manual says photos that are stored in the unit's internal memory can be rotated. I could not get this to work. With the frame set to landscape mode, photos in the portrait mode are displayed sideways and can only be rotated 180 degrees so they are sideways in the opposite direction. One has to do the 90 degree rotation in the computer using a graphics program and then load them into the digital picture frame in order to have them displayed properly. I see that another Amazon reviewer for the 7" Philips digital frame mentions the rotation problem so it must be a factory defect.

2. The second exception is that the description on Amazon says the displayed resolution is 720x480 which is normally a 4:3 aspect picture from video camcorders due to rectangular shaped pixels. But this Philips unit must be using square pixels so the aspect ratio is actually 3:2. The manual says that the 4:3 aspect photos from most digital cameras are cropped to allow them to display properly on the 3:2 aspect screen. This means that the top and bottom of the photos are cropped off. So frame your photos with ample space on the top and bottom to allow for this cropping effect.

I'm happy with my purchase despite the two exceptions listed and they can both be worked around once the user is aware of them. Hopefully the rotation problem will be fixed in a future firmware upgrade.

Anyway, I believe my son will be thrilled with this gift because of the picture quality, speed of display and overall functionality.

Customer Review: It died on me after the 3rd day, terrible product
Summary: 4 Stars

Before I start off, I'd like to say I am using this product in a way not many people will. I have loaded around 2,000 pictures on a 2 GB SD card and loaded it up in the picture frame. This was meant as a X-mas present for my Dad, who is not technical at all.

When the frame is loading pictures from the internal memory, it is fast and stable. When the frame loads pictures from the SD card and I set it to update every 5 seconds, it will quickly crash and restart. Yup, that is correct, crash. After wanting to smash it out of frustration, I decided to change the settings to 15 seconds or so and it has worked well until now.

The picture quality is very good, crisp and clear. The price is OK after doing some research. I will write something more in the future if anything bad happens. So far, it is what I expected and it was relatively easy to set up.

Update: 2 days have passed since I turned on this thing. I went to check it out and it was displaying noting, screen was blank even though the unit was on. I tried resetting and nothing, I have unplugged it and will wait for the battery to run out in order to reset it.

Yet Another Update: 3 days have passed and the unit does NOT work anymore! I let the battery run out, connected it and now it does not show any pictures. Nice Christmas gift, eh?

The bottom line: if you want to give this product to a person who is non-technical, stay away from it. It is very very very far from plug and play. I definitely regret buying this and will most likely return it.

Customer Review: Not bad so far

The quality of the displayed photos if very nice. My wife loves it. Its a great way gain access to all those photos that have been sitting on the PC. Setting the resolution of the photos to match the native resolution of the frame (720x480) lets you store a lot more in the frame's memory or an external memory card. It also makes the transitions between photos smoother since the frame doesn't have to do convert the photos on the fly.

A couple of issues though...

The software supplied provides a method of accessing CF card which doesn't seem to work, so I couldn't download photos from PC to the a CF card in the frame using the supplied USB cable & software. The manual didn't provide enough information to get past this issue.

I fell back to copying my photos to the CF card via a card reader/writer attached directly to the PC (no frame). This works fine except windows doesn't seem to be giving me access to the full capacity of the CF card. This is not an issue with the frame itself. I tried two CF cards (1GB, 128 MB), two card reader/writers, and two XP PCs with the same result. So it seems to be an XP issue. XP shows the capacity of the CF cards correctly, but writes fail after about 36 MB on both. If anyone has any insight into this issue, I'd appreciate some assistance.

Customer Review: Great for taking on trips

The best thing about this product is the battery. You can hold it in your hand, or hand it to others without the heavy stand or the cord. In browse, the button for next picture is just where your forefinger will be. I found the operation easy to learn. The battery has not given out even watching 700 photos. But you can't watch and re-charge the battery at the same time. It has superior resolution and color rendition. I downgrade it becuse it is difficult to find out how to load photos via the USB on a Mac, no software is included. You have to put the photo files a few at a time in a particular directory, and then unplug the cable. The photoframe will downsize and re-name the photos. The instructions ought to warn you that a Secure Digital card has a limit on the number of root files, so put them in a directory. The 1.5:1 aspect ratio is an oddball, but it is a shape supported by our Sony Cameras. If you erase some photos on a SD card, reload the the whole card, or the order may be wrong.

Customer Review: Grait Gift :)
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this digital frame as a gift for my wife , and it was wonderful she liked it a lot , the size of the frame is very good it looks like an original frame , the resolution is perfect ,the main disadvantages of the frame are:
1- it doesn't show movie/video files (for me and my wife it doesn't matter thus we just want to use it as a photo frame ).
2- there is no USB input that u can directly upload to the frame ( its not a big deal because i like to use the SD cards ).
3- there is no sound speaker for the frame(i already don't use the video).
4- its a bit expensive comparing to the other brands that has all the features with cheaper cost .

despite the disadvantages i love it , it has the best design between all of the brands , and so is the quality , with a nice touch of slide transitions , for me its worth the money spent on, with a good known brand , overall i recommend this product .
