Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips VOIP841 PC-Free DECT 6.0 Wireless IP Phone

Customer Review: Works like a charm
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the third Skype phone I have purchased. All three used an ethernet connection to my wireless router thus allowing me to use the phone/skype without having to have the computer on. Unfortunately, I had to return the first 2, the Linksys CIT400 and the Netgear Dual Mode Cordless Phone with Skype. Both of the previous models had the same problem: all of the sudden, whenever I made calls, I couldn't hear anything as soon as the call was answered. And since their customer service couldn't (Linksys) or wouldn't (Netgear) help, I had to return them. The Philips VOIP8411B/37 has worked flawlessly. It was easy to set up, it looks good, it functions like a regular, non-skype cordless phone and I have had no problems with it in the 1 month that I've had it. My plan was to get a Skype cordless phone that sits on my kitchen counter just like my regular phone, and use it to make all my long distance calls. That's just what I've got. And it works for receiving calls too. I have a second skype account that I use when I'm in Europe to call home. The Philips skype phone on the counter rings and my kids answer it - no cost for the call since I'm skype to skype. This has been just perfect!

Customer Review: no problems so far
Summary: 5 Stars

My time with skype until now was limited to calling 800 numbers from my pc. I read all the reviews I could find before buying this, and have had no problems so far.
The phone is light, but I find it usable and sturdy.
The call quality has been great. As people have said, the volume is a little low, but still very usable. I am guessing this could be fixed with a firmware upgrade.
Mine came with the newest firmware installed already. I just plugged it in the router and charged the phone and it was set up (after getting my free two hours of skype credit). The phone can be set to automatically use skypeout. So I can just type in the number and call over the skype network. There is no need to always choose the skype or regular phone.
I heard that the phone would not allow me to check online voicemail that requires key presses. I have not had any problem with this.

I read a review that said that you can never update the contacts list. That is wrong. All you have to do is log out and then log back in on the phone. When you log back in, the phone checks for any new contacts.

Customer Review: If you use Skype, you need this phone.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been waiting for a long time for this phone to come down in price. It finally did this week and I'm very pleased. I've had another skype phone, but had issues with it taking over my soundcard. Plus, I didn't want to depend on my computer in order to make calls via Skype.

This phone is very easy to set up. All I did was follow the quick guide included and I was making calls. You put in your Skype username and password, and the phone retrieves your info and contacts from Skype's servers. It can also be used in combination with your landline as well. Since I don't have a landline, only a cellphone, I turned it off via one of the menus. It also comes with a plug for external earpiece/mic unit. The reception is very good too. Other reviewers have complained about the volume being low. You can adjust it during a call by pressing on the arrows found on the center button. The phone also comes with a 120 free minutes plus free voicemail for 12 months.

Again, this phone is great, and anyone using Skype should consider getting it.

Customer Review: love it!

I got this after reading the amazon reviews and using Skype for over 4 years now to make international calls. I got the 1 yr US long distance calling plan for $36 (i really hope the price won't go up) and cut down on my landline bill. Calls are good quality, no complaints. I warned friends that my number won't show on caller id - other than that i have no complaints, works wonderful. The design is very nice, but some in the family complained about the small keys.

a few little problems after using it for 6 months:
-- i really wish the time would stay set (it changes all the time so i stopped trying to set it again -- although my time zone is set correctly)
-- i really wish the answering machine would work for the landline too - i don't think it does anything right now -- let me know if it does ))
-- "line is busy" signal is not audio, it shows up only on the screen and unless you look you might think your call was dropped

that's it, this thing paid for itself already, not it's just saving me money.

Customer Review: Better than the Netgear SPH150D
Summary: 5 Stars

The Philips VOIP841 and the Netgear SPH150D are essentially the same phone. The operating system within the phones are identical, even down to the sounds it makes. The only real differences are these:

1. The Netgear speakerphone is not that loud, making it hard to use in that fashion. The Philips on the other hand, is much louder when on speakerphone. In fact, most of the time, I have to turn the volume down. On the Netgear phone, I would turn the volume all the way up and still had difficulty hearing people speak.

2. It sounds simple but the Philips has a belt clip. Very simply convenient feature that the Netgear doesn't have.

3. Lastly, the Philip's look and design is better. It doesn't look cheap like the Netgear and it fits between my ear and shoulder better when I'm doing the dishes.

Other than those small differences, they're basically the same phone. I ordered both and tested them to find out which was better. In my opinion, hands down the award goes to the Philips VOIP841.
