Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips VOIP841 PC-Free DECT 6.0 Wireless IP PhoneCustomer Review: UPDATE: now freeze problems!!! OLD: Works good with no problems in 3 weeks + Summary: 5 Stars
Update:
It's been several months since I had this phone.
I am having freezing issues where phone would not let you talk. It's weird, it is online, when someone calls, you can answer, then there is no voice! You cannot hear what other say and they cant here you either. It says connected and timer runs, but no voice.
Only think you can do it to do power cycling, which is not convenient.
This issue has been repeating every 2-3 weeks, I am no longer satisfied with this product.
I ordered this item as soon as it was available from Amazon. Phone works very well. Dect range is good enough and sound is clear. I also have skype unlimited calling in US plan. Now I use this a lot and my cellphone usage has dropped slightly. On my cellphone, I changed to a prepaid plan and I think I will be saving around $30/month.
I did not use it with landline so far, only skype phone. I don't think there would be any issues with that. Phone lets you call skype contacts automatically which is good in case your network connection is down.
Overall, handset and base is portable enough for moving. I took it to work to show some friends. It was easy and worked very well at our work network which is firewalled and very secure. Works just plug and play.
Customer Review: Great VOIP Phone Summary: 5 Stars
This device does what it's supposed to do. Installation is a breeze, takes about 2 minutes to set everything up. Many others that got this phone have complained about the installation procedure, if you are not a tech savy person i recommend that you print out the manual and read it before you use the phone. The clarity from a land line call to this phone is pretty good (not as good as land line to land line, but good enough). Skype to Skype are very high quality as good as land line calls, however there is a bit of lag for about 3 seconds when you first answer or make a call, after the initial lag all is well. Ive made and received calls (skype to skype) to/from UK and Japan and the quality (clarity) was great. Every 3 hours of talk time or so (non-stop) the call might get dropped, but that is not problem, you can dial right back. I gave this phone 5 stars cos it does what it was made to do and it does it extremely well, that is it make calls for next to nothing to anywhere in the world over an broadband internet connection. Oh and.. the base and handset have a strong range. The handset also has a long battery life span, ive used it non-stop for about 6 hours once with no problems. I highly recommend this phone to anyone that wants to save money on their long distance phone bills : ). Hope this review helps.
Customer Review: Perfect! Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this phone and got it 2 days later. I was a little worried about how I would go about connecting it and setting everything up to work properly. I had read in other reviews that some people had to upgrade their phone to the latest firmware. Well, amazon/philips must have been reading the reviews too, because my phone arrived with the latest firmware already installed.
Setup was a breeze. I plugged the phone's base into the ethernet jack of my Westell 327w wireless modem/router from Verizon DSL. Without installing any software or having to change any settings, I was able to login to my Skype account through the phone and complete a phone call. I was really impressed at how easy everything was. I only hooked it up to my router; I didn't bother to add the telephone line to it since I have a separate landline anyway. I mainly use this to make international calls (much cheaper rates than phone company) and to call other Skype users (which is totally free). I am considering buying a couple more of these phones and sending them to family in other countries so we can call Skype-to-Skype for totally free.
If you're considering it, the bottom line is, I think this is an excellent deal at $99 and pays for itself in a short time with the money you'll save.
Customer Review: An excellent skype/landline phone! Summary: 5 Stars
I needed a decent skype phone that will not need my PC to be on and which will support also a landline - since having SKYPE phone, landline phone and 4 mobile phones in my home I found to be slightly too much...
I have been using this product for couple of days and so far have been very satisfied. As opposed to some products I have already tried (SMC WIFI phone offered on skype.com), this software (even though it looks the same) works much faster on PHILIPS phone. The phone is very easy to set up and has a noticeable loudspeaker - very nice for conference calls.
I have also bought an additional handset and the set up was very easy. the base station supports up to 4 handsets which can call each other internally. It supports only ONE skype account login - which is "cloned" over various handsets - which I find slightly unfortunate because it would be really cool to allow 1 skype account per handset at time and not 1 account per base. Apart from that this product really rocks! Highly recommended!
an advice for european customers - the charging adapter supports only 120V (and not 120V-220V like many other devices) - therefore the price difference between the US and EU is not very convenient as you need to buy the electricity converters (my case).
Customer Review: Great product - a few issues on first use Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this phone and at first could not make any outgoing calls to landline numbers (non-Skype), although they would ring at the other end but no one could hear anything. I finally found an online forum and it appears that this has been a very common problem with this phone when first starting to use it. The remedy was to simply upgrade the firmware which is very simple to do (instructions are on Philips website). The phone that Amazon sent me was new, but the firmware was outdated by a couple of levels. Once I upgraded it, it worked great and has been an excellent phone. It has many features, is light but solid enough that it feels like a quality phone. It is intuitive to use. It also lets you plug in a landline as well as use Skype, but we have dropped our landline and use this phone exclusively now. The voice quality is excellent and no one has been able to tell that we are now using a phone over the web. Great buy! Our relatives in NY, Ireland and Spain are also now using these phones and we all call each other for free. Great savings!!! And any landlines that we call (to Ireland, etc) are only 2 cents per minute. This phone has paid for itself already by reducing our landline charges.
