Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of XBOX 360 AIR FLO COOLERCustomer Review: Great for those looking for an all-in-one solution to A/V and cooling...with a catch. Summary: 4 StarsWhat can I say, Pelican's Air Flo Cooler (also known as the Cooler King in Europe; where it was first released by Datel or some other company) is pretty much a do-all be-all add-on for your Xbox 360.
Note: As mentioned previously, the Air Flo Cooler should probably be recommended only to those who have a non-HDMI Xbox 360. Essentially for
those who purchased their Xbox 360 in 2005-2006; possibly 2007 as well.
Anyway, it has pretty much every connection (minus HDMI) you could dream of as far as audio and video are concerned. You can hook up the 360 to a regular / standard definition TV via the red / white / yellow RCA plugs, connect to a TV with RGB / composite connections, S-Video is also available for those who want a clearer picture on a SDTV or even connect the 360 via VGA to either a PC monitor or an HDTV with a VGA connector. You select which output you'd like to use by flipping a set of two switches; there's text right on the add-on that tells you exactly what setting you should set for each output type.
Audio is supplied via the red / white plugs or a digital optical port.
There is also 4 USB ports on the Air Flo Cooler so it pretty much acts like a USB hub giving you more USB ports for your 360 accessories.
There is a pass-through Ethernet port to connect your broadband connection to your 360 for online gaming.
The last feature of the Air Flo Cooler (as the name clearly suggests) is the addition of two fans. These supposedly help your 360 out by increasing the air flow and possibly keeping your 360 cooler. Whether it works or not is beyond me. I guess it's great if you're deadset in having an extra set of fans helping out your 360 fans.
Oh yeah, it also comes with a cable that features 5 connectors to cover almost all of your possible needs. S-Video and VGA cables will have to be supplied by you.
So all-in-all, it's a great add-on for the 360 and it's reasonably priced. For a little more than the price of Microsoft brand VGA cable (or a little less than the Microsoft brand HD AV cable), you can get an add-on that does all of the following:
Video: SDTV RCA, SDTV / HDTV composite, S-video, VGA
Audio: Stereo RCA, Digital Optical out
USB ports: 4 USB
Cooling fans: 2 fans to help (?) cool your 360
Of course, I didn't rate this add-on 4/5 stars because it was perfect.
You see, the debate is still on whether cooling fans actually help or hurt the Xbox 360. Some argue that the extra fans put strain on the built-in fans and others argue that it increases air flow so the built-in fans have less work to do and thus last longer. I actually took my Dremel and cut the fan portion of the unit off so I just have the connector portion. Sure, it definitely voids the warranty and it doesn't look all that pretty, but I wasn't so sure I needed the extra cooling power of the Air Flo Cooler, so I just cut it off. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but it gives me pretty much all the benefits with none of the worry of possibly killing my 360's built-in fans.
One other problem / con is that Digital Optical audio doesn't seem to work if you use the VGA connection. I haven't personally tried the other connections with the Digital Optical output, but I did a search on Google and others seemed to have problems with the DOO not working with VGA. So if you MUST have a HD signal via VGA AND DOO, the Air Flo Cooler probably isn't for you.
