Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Patriot PSD22G6672S Signature PC2-5300 DDR2 667MHz 2GB SODIMM CAS 5 ModuleCustomer Review: Works flawlessly inside a HP 1000-1030NR Mini Netbook Summary: 5 Stars
Upgrading the RAM for HP Minis are ridiculously simple! If you are not sure, go to You Tube and search for keywords "Upgrade ram HP Mini". There's a bunch of videos showing you how to do it in less than a minute. Although HP has a few different model numbers, the basic design of their netbooks are pretty consistent for the 1000 series. My model number is 1030nr.
Oddly, the stock RAM stick in my Mini was a 1gb PC2-6400, but all the videos and message boards that I've seen (including HP's site) had said that the PC2-5300 was the correct chip. Since this chip is stated to have decently low latency numbers, that's the reason I took a chance on it.
So how did it perform?
From a subjective viewpoint, it seems to be just a smidge faster than the stock RAM stick. But maybe it's my own biased perception of wanting it to be faster because I just spent 39 buckaroos for this thing (still waiting for that rebate... hope those guys didn't forget to send it to me). I think the lower latency of this RAM works well, especially for web browsing. Higher bandwidth is good when you need to crunch large amounts of data, which you are unlikely to do with a netbook because the processor speed is lame. Low latency is good for processing smaller chunks of info more quickly.
To be honest, I noticed a much greater improvement in speed when I erased Windows XP for Ubuntu Linux 10.04 Desktop Edition. The Linux OS is very stripped down and lean, making it super quick compared to Windows or Apple OS's. Best of all, it's free! Also, you can surf the web virtually virus free, which is perfect when using public access points like Starbucks and Airport Terminals =).
Was it worth the money?
If you are using Windows XP on the netbook, I would say that it is definitely worth it to upgrade the RAM. Being that I'm using Linux on my netbook now, I could have managed with the original 1gb stick. At this point, however, I'll keep using the Patriot 2gb stick since it doesn't hinder the performance at all, it worked perfectly from the get-go, and seems to be reliable so far without a single problem. Therefore, 5 stars!
