Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Pantone huey MEU101

Customer Review: What a difference!
Summary: 5 Stars

I spent years being frustrated with the difference between the colors I was seeing on my screen, and the colors that were output by my printer. I tried manual calibration products that depended on my eyes to make the adjustments, but as I found out when I first used the Huey my vision is not nearly as accurate as I would like to believe.

I purchased the Huey about 3 months ago. Setup was extremely simple. You just install the software, plug the Huey in to a USB port and follow the onscreen instructions. After calibrating my monitor with Huey, the colors looked very strange to me. This wasn't a problem with the calibration, it was a problem with my perception. After color correcting a few photos in Photoshop CS2 and then printing them on my Canon Pixma Pro 9000, I was amazed! The colors that were printed matched those onscreen perfectly!

I highly recommend this product. It is unbeatable at the price. As a side note, you will still need to make sure that your computer and printer are speaking the same language (i.e. correct color space and ICC profile) to get accurate results, but the Huey takes the guess work out of the process. Finally, what I see is what I get!

Customer Review: It DOES work
Summary: 5 Stars

I was initially disappointed by the yellowness of the whites produced by the Huey, but then I realized my EYES were in need of calibration. I figured out that after a while, you can go back to "uncorrected" and the pre-calibration view then looks too blue. To really test this, I got some test pattern prints from the web and printed them at a good lab and compared them to my monitor. Yup, the thing works: the colors matched. I don't know why so many folks are giving it 1 star--do they have a defective unit or are they possibly doing something wrong? At any rate, you have to get over the initial shock because you've been using an uncalibrated display for so long. With the extremely small size, quick calibration (much faster than a spyder) and nifty ambient light measurement capabilities, there is no better product under a hundred bucks. I've had mine for about six months and take it back and forth between work and home--it barely takes up any room in my bag. The calibration routine is so quick that I can edit images on my lunch hour and the setup doesn't take a big chunk of the time. If I had to go through a lengthy calibration routine, this would be a deal breaker.

Customer Review: Stupidly easy to use
Summary: 5 Stars

If you suspect that your monitor's colors aren't calibrated correctly, but you have never been able to get them just right, this device basically takes care of the problem in a matter of minutes. Just about anyone can get better results, and it doesn't require much technical know-how. The most important thing is stringing the wire up and behind the monitor during adjustment, because the suction pads aren't quite strong enough to support the weight of the wire and its USB extension piece (when it's stuck on an LCD monitor, that is -- the glass surface of a CRT should work fine).

But other than that, it really is dead simple. Install the software, reboot, plug the device in, and follow the prompts. It's not the cheapest way to calibrate, so you might not want to get this if you don't expect to be moving your monitor much. In theory, it's a fantastic tool for a notebook, and it would probably be handy for a desktop administrator as well.

And keep in mind that the device can save multiple settings. You can switch between custom modes for photo editing, browsing the Web, and playing games.

Customer Review: Easy to use and does a great job removing a color cast
Summary: 5 Stars

Monitor calibration can't be any easier. The Huey is small and compact which makes it easy to store and to travel with. I was used it on a new Dell 21 inch ultrasharp. The suction cups adhere to the screen with minimal pressure and there was no fear of damage to the LCD screen. Calibration took less than two minutes and you get a before and after look after it finishes. My neutral grays are dead on now. It is much more accurate than trying to calibrate your screen with Adobe Gamma and trying to match the R G B squares. It is hard to beat for the price. Some reviews complain about the thin USB cord. I liked the thin cord because it rolls up into a small place. I guess some reviewers have 800 pound gorillas doing their screen calibration. This is a screen calibrator and is the first step for getting better prints. It does not calibrate your printer. For your printer you need profile creating software or you have to rely on the ICC profiles that come with your printer. Huey will remove any color cast that you have on your monitor.

Customer Review: I love my Huey!
Summary: 5 Stars

I not only make specialty costumes for film and TV, but I do all my own advertising for both my design and production companies. Having to create things on the computer that are either output to print or translated into an actual 3D article, I have long been familiar with Pantone's color matching system. I use their formula guide and color matching chips all the time in my work.

So, when I started noticing discrepancies between the colors that were on my screen and what was coming out of my printer, I was delighted to learn Pantone was making an affordable color calibrator. I was even happier to find out out simple it was to use and how effective it was. The first thing I printed was a composite photo of Amazonian tree frogs for a costume project. The print colors were the most vibrant I've seen out of an inkjet printer and a dead-on match to the monitor.

Kudos to the folks at Pantone for putting out a product that is invaluable to independent artists and photographers.
