Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PalmOne m130 Handheld

Customer Review: Palm M130, Price/Feature combination is outstanding.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned Palm's since the first one. I recently owned a Palm 5x. I was hoping to hold out until a future high-end version came along but my Palm Vx had taken one too many knocks and I needed more storage space.

This new M130 allows me to get all the features of the high-end models: (color, rechargable, MMC/SD slot, USB connection to my PC, the software bundle and expansion). The price was just right for me.

The screen is bright enough but a bit smaller. I've downloaded some pictures on a 32MB card and they look ok.

The unit seems pretty sturdy, the case is hard plastic and has a flip down screen protector. I like the one-button time feature of the M1xx models.

I was thinking about buying some of the software that is included with the M130. So this made the decision to buy a new device even easier. It comes with DataViz Documents ToGo Pro, Palm Reader, the MGI Photo application and a few other apps.

There are a few minor trade-offs like screen size and slower processor but I'm just amazed at the value combination of this product. The trade-offs are worth it. You can even get it with a bundle from Amazon for less that SRP. Great!

Customer Review: Best of breed.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been a PDA user since "the beginning", starting with a Casio model in the 80s. Switching to a PalmPilot in the early 90s, I learned then that moving from one brand to another is a daunting task, though it seems I didn't learn that lesson well enough. I bought an HP Jornada several months back and have played with it since March, trying to migrate my data from the Palm to the HP. [Forget it, it will never be correct no matter what program you use] Giving up, I bought an M130, and boy, am I glad I did. The screen is sharp, the colors are vivid, the processor is fast, the expandability is good, and most importantly, the data migration was *fairly* simple [you cannot beam address and memo data from a Palm III or V, so it must be done via a PC. Synch your old data, save the Palm file with your profile name to your desktop, uninstall the Palm software completely, install the new Palmware, drag the file you saved into the new Palm folder and synch the new Palm....that's it].
All in all, I wish I had remembered the old lesson several months ago....if you have a lot of data, stay with the same brand PDA and make your life simpler.

Customer Review: Palm M130 - Good Migration Path From Grayscale Visor Deluxe
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the M130 as a migration from a gray-scale Visor Deluxe I've had for over two years. I chose the M130 after comparing both Palm-based & Pocket PC models from various manufacturers. I really wanted to move to a combined PDA /Web / Blackberry-like pager and cell phone yet all current models, including the new Tungsten W, have short-comings in terms of features, wireless coverage areas, let alone prices.

So far I'm please with the M130 - it moved all of my previous apps over without issue and with an SD128 card I have more than enough room. With the bundled Documents to Go app I can now bring my Excel, Word and even Powerpoint (useful for the outline view of a presentation rather than slide view) files - this is a superior app over Quickoffice in my opinion.

The screen is bright and the color is good for 58K+ colors, and the battery life so far has been good across 2-3 days of checking schedules, contact info, Advantgo and viewing Excel files before requiring re-charge.

So until the next gen of PDA w/Palm/Web/Phone/SMS is really available and proven the Palm M130 is a great interim PDA.

Customer Review: Love this little thing!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first bought the green screen m125, but I work a lot in low-light situations and found it didn't work well then. After one weekend, I went back to the store and exchanged it for the m130, hoping that the color screen would rectify that shortcoming. It did, and I'm thrilled.

The capabilities of the m130 have revolutionized how I work. I no longer need a clipboard when I'm photographing weddings, and I've done away with my written appointment book in the studio. Everything goes into the computer, and is synced to the Palm m130. I keep it with me everywhere I go, so can easily and quickly add doctor's appointments, check my schedule, do EVERYTHING. Also, for the dead times when I'm sitting and waiting for whatever, the gaming capabilities are tremendous. Lots of excellent games out there for time-wasting.

I'm pleased with the rechargeable battery. While it does get used quickly (lasts much longer when the light's on low than on high), it fully recharges in just ten minutes! Wish my camera's rechargeable battery pack was that fast.

My family knows already that where *I* go, my Palm goes.

Customer Review: A power-user tip
Summary: 5 Stars

I found a neat trick that I thought I'd pass on.

I noticed that in the built-in apps such as the To Do list, Memopad, and even the Datebook, if you pull down the Options menu, you'll find the selection, "phone lookup."

This is useful if you create, say, a To Do list item that says, "Call John Smith about current account." Using this feature, you can pop over to your phone book, look up John's number, and then cancel out of the phone book app and go back to the To Do list, Memopad, or whatever.

However, there is a little trick to this that makes it work much better. The trick is to position the cursor after the person's name in the text of the To Do or Memo item, or wherever you have it, that you want to look up, before you tap on "phone lookup." This way you will be popped right to the person's name in the database, instead of having to look further from there.

One further gotcha I noted is to be careful not to leave a space after the person's name and put the cursor there. If you do that it won't directly look up the person's name and you'll still have to scroll down to it.
