Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PalmOne Zire 72 HandheldCustomer Review: A Great Buy Summary: 5 Stars
I had originally ordered the Palm Zire 71 for my birthday. but then THE NEXT DAY they had came out with the Zire 72 and completly erased it from the website. So i thought that this was a much better upgrade from the Zire 71 and worth the extra 100 bucks. The Zire 72 overall deserves 5 stars.MP3 - i havent been able to use this feature yet because i dont have the sm writer so i cannot judge this feature. Camera - Is overall very good for its group. Don't expect a high grade digital camera. But if you have the right lighting and a steady hand the pictures can come out very clear. and with the software you can enhance it to make the picture even better. Bluetooth - Is a very nice added feature. i can set it up with a laptop and it will almost immediatly reconize it. i havent yet been able to get onto the internet through it but i just suspect that its the internet settings. Apps. - They give some good programs included. A web and email client, and Documents to go is useful when you recieve word documents through bluetooth. Note pads is useful just to right a "post it" note or if your sitting around bored. The clock is also very handy since they give you can find out the time in 6 different locales. and what programs they dont give you you can download from different web sites. Voice Memo - Is actually better then i expected, it doesnt record as well as a stand alone recorder but it does well for being built in. The only drawback that it comes with a USB cable rather then a Cradel. But in the long run it doesnt really matter because with all the other great features and performance of it you really dont care. Defitnly worth the money.
Customer Review: Zire 72, THE BEST mid range PDA currently available. Summary: 5 Stars
If you are shopping for a PDA device, realize no other PDA at this price point offers all the features the Zire 72 offers. In brief, the Zire 72 has currently one of the best digital camera available in PDA's, 1.2 MP with CMOS technology PLUS video. The MP3 playback is topnotch. Quality and ease of use is extremely good. And built in BLUETOOTH! (this is the perfect technology for low power consuming devices like PDA's, cell phones). Now, some people assume without wifi (802.11) capability you are unable to browse surf the web with bluetooth..this is UNTRUE. In fact, Bluetooth is a much better option than wifi for devices like PDA's, etc. It is designed for low power wireless applications. To surf the web, all you need to do is share your internet connection on your PC, buy a 20 dollar USB bluetooth adapter (get the Linksys if possible, search amazon, etc..) and you'll be surfing the internet using bluetooth. Bluetooth consumes much less power than wi-fi (so battery lasts longer..), the USB adapters are cheap, and you can use your existing PC as your internet access point. I was debating whether to buy this or the CLIE peg37. It's close, but Zire 72 is the better choice. Much better camera plus video, better mp3 quality, better design, bluetooth, SDIO slot. The only advantage the CLIE has is Wifi for surfing the web, but as I mentioned, bluetooth will work fine (and there are much more uses for bluetooth). PLUS in the near future, SanDisk will market a WiFi SDIO adapter card. Then you can have the Zire 72 bluetooth AND wifi capable!
Customer Review: Best PDA I've ever had the privelege to use Summary: 5 Stars
Received Zire 72 for Christmas, so can't beat the price! :) Regardless, I've got nothing but praise for the 72. Peeling paint problem appears to have been resolved in later revisions like the one I have.
Battery life not optimal compared to previous Palm units (I had a Palm IIIxe for reference - 2 AAA's lasted for weeks), but I've never run out during the day yet. Keep in mind that the newer generation of Palm devices have a LOT more drain on the battery - high resolution screen which is always backlit, a MUCH faster CPU, greater amounts of memory, multimedia applications, a camera and more.
The LCD screen is gorgeous. Easily the best LCD I've seen to date.
Camera takes adequate pictures in good light. Forget about taking night or low light pics.
Bought a 1GB SanDisk card for carrying data and MP3s around. Zire had no trouble accessing card and plays MP3s beautifully.
I charged it fully and let it drain almost completely for the first few times, and now I just top it off nightly.
Bluetooth sync with my laptop (via USB Bluetooth adapter) is flawless and speedy.
Only con in my opinion is the lack of a hotsync/charging cradle. I suspect someone (palmOne or a 3rd party) will step up to the task eventually.
Hint: The Zire 72 will charge ever-so-slowly over just a USB cable connection if left turned off.
Customer Review: Perfect Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the Zire 72 during the end of october. It is great, I absolutly love it. I have read about all the flaws it was supposed to have and I have found none. The camera is by far the best feature. I use it all the time, and the video option is great too. I really don't care that there is no lens cover, the lens is recessed in the unit so its hard to scratch it, and anyways I always have it in its case.
I have not used the Bluetooth feature but I will be soon. I am going to get a little bluetooth thingy for my computer so that way I can wirelessly hot sync. I am planning on buying the wifi card later.
I use it to listen to mp3's all the time, I have an mp3 player but sometimes I dont have it with me or its inconvienient to use.
The screen is beutiful. It is bright sharp and very high resolution. I have looked at some other palms and pocket PC's and most cant compare. I do have one complaint though, it isn't the full length of the screen like pocket pc's are.
Battery life is good, I charge it every night though so I never really worry. It really should have a removable battery though.
I really use this all the time. It keeps me really organized. I would definetly recomend this to everyone.
Customer Review: Excellent Wireless Access (Web and Email)... Summary: 5 Stars
I have T-mobile with the unlimited T-zones service ($9.95/month). Palmone has created an excellent bluetooth set up program in this new Zire 72 but it just doesn't work. Fortunately I found something that works. Search the 1src.com site for forum posts by clicclic (Amazon doesn't allow URLs it seems).
Any problems you have connecting can be found on message boards. on Howard Forums.com. Although that site is so stuffed with posts searching for something is like finding a floating coconut in the Indian ocean.
After getting the wireless access going through GPRS and the Nokia 3650 the Zire became indispensable (spelling?). Web Pro is an excellent browser and PalmOne's Versamail is great. The Zire 72 also can download and send SMSs. The device is finally finally connected. Or rather, *I* am finally connected. I know some people who had wireless in 1999 on their Palms/Handsprings. What do I know...
This is an excellent device with an excellent screen and a fast processor. It's just great. Get a 256MB SD card and load up all the freeware/movies/mp3s you can get your hands on and have fun. Check out these totally fun freeware games from a great programmer in Japan named "Naoki Ito". He has great freeware games.
