Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Palm TX HandheldCustomer Review: Palm T/X and Digitizer Problems Summary: 5 Stars
First off, I absolutely love my Palm T/X. However, the Palm T/X does have problems with the plastic digitizer (that's the part underneath the screen that detects the pressure from the stylus when you write). These plastic digitizers will fail within a year. The good news is that since this was a very popular PDA, there are after market companies that make replacement parts, and you can replace the digitizer with another plastic one, or you can get a glass digitizer. If you do a web search, you can find the websites that sell the replacement parts, and there are several videos available that show you the steps you need to do to take the T/X apart and replace the digitizer. If you don't feel comfortable doing this (it's not for the faint of heart), you can mail your T/X in and, for an extra fee of course, have it replaced for you.
I have had my Palm T/X for three years, I don't know what I would do without it. I replaced the digitizer myself after one year with a plastic one, but then a year later it failed, so I went with the glass one. The glass digitizer works great, and I have not had any problems. I really don't want a personal smart phone, my employer provides one. I will probably buy a new one in the box just to have if I ever lose this one, or drop in a rain puddle. I sync my calendar, I use the alarm function for meeting reminders, I use the note pad for taking quick notes, I have my favorite apps, I use an ereader program so have a nice ereader that fits in my back pocket
It look's like the newer versions of the large ereaders from Amazon and others, seem to be slowly morphing into large PDA's. Each version adds some extra functionality, like playing your MP3's, read pdf programs, etc.
Customer Review: Great Entry Level Experience Summary: 5 Stars
I spent a considerable amount of time trying to determine which PDA would best serve my needs. I consulted various review sites, compared several products (palm and pocket pc alike), and asked for the input of friends and other current owners. The first hurdle was Palm OS vs Pocket PC.
The consensus was that the Palm OS may feature fewer bells and whistles than the Pocket PC, but that it was, in the end, a good thing. The "kitchen sink" method favored by Pocket PC apparently leads to frequent crashes, something I have yet to experience after nearly 2 months of daily use. Palm OS is streamlined, easy to pickup, and presents a clean and concise design and feature set. Once I had determined that I wanted a Palm unit...the question became which one...
Living in a major metro area (Wash DC) means Free Wi-Fi abounds...so the ability to tap into that seemed like a foregone conclusion, which means that the Z22 was out...I already have an iPod, so the interest in lifedrive was minimal...which narrowed it down to the Tungsten E2 and the TX. In the end, the TX narrowed out the E2 because once I paid for the Wifi card for the E2, I was most of the way to the cost of the TX...and that difference in cost justified the larger screen, faster processor, and larger on-board memory of the TX. If the WIFI is not such a key feature, than the E2 was definitely something I wanted to go for. But, I am very satisified with the purchase I did make...it has been stable, with good battery life, and it has been very easy to use, with consistent performance and results! Anyone stil in the market for a fully-featured, powerful PDA will do right by this product...
Happy Hunting!
Customer Review: Excellent, full-featured Palm Summary: 5 Stars
I had a Palm Tungsten E for years and while I thought wi-fi would be nice, hotspots were not as prevalent as they are today. I loved the Tungsten E and was devastated when the battery finally gave in after 3+ years of hard use. I experimented with the Treo but wanted wi-fi and wasn't interested in paying $45 a month for a data plan from my wireless carrier and I hated the litte keyboard and missed Graffiti, so I went back to the PDA, purchasing the TX. The TX has every feature I could possibly want except a phone! I have had no problems with the device and the wi-fi works flawlessly. I recommend a Sena flip case to protect your investment, Boxwave screen protectors and the Boxwave Mini-Sync cable to charge and sync your TX at the same time, and the Palm Wireless Keyboard for travel - you won't even need your laptop (saves you time in the security line at the airport!) I also recommend two essential pieces of software: the first is NeatFreak Pack Plus, which includes an Uninstall Manager with a Sanbox feature that allows you to try new programs without fear and gives you the ability to uninstall them quickly and easily, along with all of their preferences and associated files. This is very important because some of the older Palm OS software programs are not compatible with the flash memory on the TX and will cause it to crash. The second is PowerBtn, which allows you to map the power button to one of the hard buttons on the front of your TX. Palm's power buttons are notoriously delicate and this program will preserve it while also allowing you to use the program for a hard reset if your power button does fail. All in all the TX is a great machine and I am very happy with it.
Customer Review: Superb handheld device Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great device. Since I use an Apple Macintosh, I have never tried Windows CE or Windows Mobile devices because I need a handheld that will optimally compatible with my Mac. This one has it all...WiFi, Bluetooth, sync via USB, 128 MB built in memory, a pretty fast processor, the very intuitive Palm OS and some very useful software out of the box. I use the included Blazer web browser to surf the web (I just need to find a WiFi hotspot, make a connection, and away I go). It works fairly well on most HTML sites (better than I thought it would) and because I can toggle between portrait and landscape mode, I can minimize the need for scrolling. Emailing with the included VersaMail software is simple and straightforward. Transferring files between my Mac and Palm TX via Bluetooth is a cinch, and I've even set up the handheld to dial phone number from Contacts on my Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone. The 320 x 480 hi-res screen is very bright and displays photos clearly. I can even copy JPEGs to an SD card (I have a 1 GB card) via a card reader, insert it into the SD card slot and view the JPEGs in the Media application. So there's no need for time consuming synching and conversion of photos to PDB format. Of course, there is a wealth of Palm OS software out there, so you will probably find any application that you need for the device. Even with it's oversized screen, the Palm TX is compact and solid, and with an aluminum hardcase, is very well protected. Overall, I'm very satisfied-I can surf the web, send email, read a book, play a game, view pictures, remind myself of important appointments, etc, etc. Very handy, and everything just works...
Customer Review: Just bought my 3rd Palm PDA Summary: 5 Stars
This is my 3rd Palm PDA. It is replacing a Palm V that I had for several years.
I had actually tried to not buy another Palm and to get something more recent so given I had a complete backup of everything that I had on my Palm V and I needed a new phone I bought one of the Palm Pre's - after 18 months I cannot find one positive thing to say about the Pre.
I travel a lot and have noticed more and more frequent fliers with Kindles and iPads and I decided to try an iPad and found that what I use a PDA for the iPad is just too big to do
I use my Palm all the time 7 days a week I use the Reminder function for absolutely everything, appointments and meetings, to take notes during meetings, birthdays, anniversaries, history of all travel info. I use it as my alarm clock when I am away, when to pick up a family member, when to take a pill. Moreover I use it for anything that I would write down somewhere, my blood pressure and every other metric doctors tell me.
The Contact tab enables me to save every phone number and address of everyone I know. The Memo tab has every funny thing my kids said when they grew up to what stock I am tracking.
Unfortunately I did not see many options in the PDA space when looking to replace the Palm. Yes, I read all about other people's problems but I can honestly say I have not had them or any for that matter. But in the end you really need to ask yourself what and how will I be using this or anything you buy and for me after months of searching I bought another Palm and now I am asking myself how I got by without it
