Customer Review: Palm TX Cradle --- Not quite great
Summary: 4 Stars

I guess I was a bit aggravated by the lack of a cradle when I purchased my Palm TX. Having used a Palm Vx and used their INCLUDED cradle I felt I really needed one to replace the TINY connector and "Mickey mouse" Hot Synch button supplied by Palm.

While the TX cradle is functional it is NOTHING like my old Vx cradle. The Vx cradle was made of cast aluminum and very nicely fit the Palm Vx whereas this one is light plastic with a wire bale protruding from the back to keep it from tipping over.

The Palm TX "perches" on the top of three plastic pegs and were it not snapped to these pegs it would simply fall off. Basically the cradle is convex and attaches to a convex surface of the TX; sort of like balancing a ball on the top of another.

As I said above, the cradle is light plastic. If you lift the Palm TX off the cradle you MUST use two hands... one to keep the cradle on the surface and one to lift the Palm. DON'T EVEN THINK of using one hand to remove the Palm TX and rotating the device free of the cradle or one of the plastic pins will surely break.

The cradle is functional and keeps the Palm device secure and upright. However, when I connected the TX to the cradle I found that the computer found, connected and disconnected to the USB cradle every 30 seconds or so. Also Hot Synch would only variably work. I looked far and wide on the [...] site and fount a patch for this hidden deaply on the site. I downloaded the patch and sure enough the constant finding of new USB hardware stopped. Indeed it would NEVER find the device and Hot Synch was impossible.

I "cured" the above problem by clearing as much off the Palm as I could and then re-running the Palm software disk. All now seems to be normal.

So... Why did I rate it a "4"? Well it does hold the palm in an upright position and it works. I also have used double stick foam tape to hold the cradle in position on my desk so I can use only one hand to pick up my Palm TX. This means it does what I desire. However Palm could make its customers MUCH MORE HAPPY by including a form-fitting heavy duty cradle for the devices they sell.

Oh... One more Gotcha... If you remove power from the cradle overnight but leave the USB cable connected to the computer that is turned off, the battery in the Palm device will drain completely and will not function until it has charged about 5 to 10 minutes.
