Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PTC Premium 100ft Cat5E Certified Light Grey bulk cable - solid coreCustomer Review: Quality cable for home installation Summary: 5 Stars
Used this cable to do a whole house, wired network installation. Wireless is great and has its uses, we use it all the time for sitting on the couch surfing the net and all of our iPhone usage. But when it comes to connecting my work PCs, gaming and stream high-def content I want the speed and reliability that only a wired connection can bring.
The description of the cable is accurate (thought I don't know if its exactly 100', another review said it was short... I didn't measure). I bought 2 rolls which was more than I needed for the runs we made. The cables pulled nicely through the walls and attic. Cutting and crimping was very simple. I was very happy to find the twisted pairs are NOT bonded, meaning each pair of cables is simple "mated" by being twisted together. Bonded pairs mean the plastic shielding of each individual wire is fused with the other in its pair. Terminating bonded pairs is a major pain, you have the added step of having to separate each twisted pair by cutting the 2 wires apart. The easiest ways I have found to cut bonded pairs is either...
1. Getting a wood block or cutting board, untwisting the pairs, place the pair on the cutting surface, place an exacto knife or other blade in between the wires about an inch from the end of the cable with the blade facing the end. Then pull the cable cutting the 2 apart.
2. Using a pair of diagonal-cutting pliers and snip down the bond.
But, since these are NOT bonded, you don't have to worry about doing that step (over and over and over). A real "plus" to this cable!
To terminate this cable simple cut the outer jacket off (careful not to cut any of the inner wires or their jackets), separate the pairs (orange, blue, green, brown) and then untwist each pair. With 8 wires free, you arrange them. I used T568B (also called just "B") color order... (for patch cable, hold the plug with the pins facing up and the retention clip facing down, the pins should be away from... order is from left to right)
White-Orange, Orange, White-Green, Blue, White-Blue, Green, White-Brown, Brown
If you are terminating into a jack, they typically have the color codes on the jack showing you wear to put each wire.
All our connections worked on the first try, no bad runs. The speed of the line is great. I would highly recommend this cable to someone needing bulk cable but doesn't want to buy a whole 1000' box or pay out the nose at the hardware store for cable by the foot. This cable is just about half the price of cable-by-the-foot at my local hardware store.
