Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PNY Geforce FX5200 256MB PCI Graphics Card

Customer Review: Upgraded from integrated graphics controller and can see a huge improvement!
Summary: 4 Stars

I have a Dell dimension 2400 desktop with an integrated video/graphics controller (Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller) After reading the reviews on this site, I wasn't certain that the geForce FX 5200 would be much of an upgrade over what I already have. But, I installed the card last night and it is great! I've been trying to play games like Half Life2, Star Wars: Battlefront 2, Counter Strike Source, NBA Live 2004, etc. on my PC for a while. And, although these games do run, there is a considerable amount of lag and slowdown which really ruins the gameplay. Especially in games like Half Life2 where there are a lot of things on the screen at the same time. Like a huge open area. Outside maps run extremely poor. But, the geForce FX 5200 gave it enough of a boost where the games run seamlessly, with little to no lag/slowdown. The graphics are noticeable better (lighting, textures, shadows). The load times are faster. I'm very thrilled that such an inexpensive card could make such a big difference. There were maps I couldn't even play on Half Life 2: Deathmatch. But, I played them after installing this card and they run with no problems. I have never used a high-end graphics card before, so I have nothing to compare this card to. But, it is a huge improvment over my integrated graphics chip that came preinstalled from Dell.

Customer Review: Dual monitors without trouble in WinXP but not in 64-bit Linux
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this card ten months ago and have been using it happily with my Windows XP (SP-1 and SP-2) systems. However, when I boot to my Linux alternate OS, the 64-bit version of Fedora Core 9, I've had a lot of trouble, and some of it appears irremediable.

After much fiddling in the Linux OS, I finally got my desktop to stretch across both monitors, treating them as a single, extended screen. But I have not been able to get them set up as "twin-view" (nVidia's term), in which I can set up each monitor as a separate screen, each with its own wallpaper, its own resolution setting, and its own orientation. I like to have one monitor set up in landscape orientation and one in portrait. Easy to make this card do that in WinXP, but can't get it done in Linux 64-bit.

I basically have the same problems I had before and it's conflicting with the on-board video controller because my BIOS doesn't allow me to turn that off. I was hoping I could buy two monitors but it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to do that. Acrobat Reader opens up a little faster and works better now. It doesn't get stuck as I pull the scroll bar down. That sort of thing is found in every application - so in that sense it was a good upgrade, but the web isn't any faster from what I see which I thought it would. As long as you can get your BIOS to turn off your other video card this will be a good upgrade for any one stuck with an old PC like me.

Customer Review: works well with most programs
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this to upgrade an HP mediacenter PC m1264n. It worked perfectly with Call of duty(2003) but had significant lag time with
Delta Force Black Hawk down(2003) I was running w/ 3Gb memory. Although the water textures and lighting was perfect, aiming was almost like a half second delayed-making me a frequent KIA. Photos load quickly. Set-up was difficult since I had on-board video and needed a patch from the PNY
website but their tech support was quick and efficient(don't bother with HP customer support)OK for the cheap price. I think it is the best considering the old technology.

Customer Review: PNY Geforce FX5200 256MB PCI Graphics Card
Summary: 4 Stars

This product worked for me error-free thus far. Documentation was good and installed effortlessly.

My old motherboard is non-AGP or PCI-E so this was just what I needed for a low-priced boost.

Better PCI cards can be found, but is it worth it on a PCI bus which is limited in itself?

I can run pretty advanced games like Armerica's Army 2.0 at pretty high resolutions and texture details with relative ease.
