Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Palm Z22 Handheld

Customer Review: Very useful
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a solid unit, which beats my previous Sharp system by 10 country miles. For one thing, it's in color. For another, it is compatible with both Windows AND Linux. This enabled me synchronize two address books--my old Sharp database and my Linux database, in one location, and then add the old Sharp (Windows only) data to my Linux desktop.

The Palm Zire 22 runs like a dream on Windows; it remains funky on Linux, but it does WORK, even there. Even with the bugs, I've successfully consolidated several thousand contacts from two incompatible databases, and a heavy calendar, into the Palm.

Granted, Linux users still face bugs with the compatible Linux Zire 22 software. One can find the latest workarounds from the open source pilot-link organization, including the latest pilot-link version, to coordinate the Zire 22 with Linux desktop operating systems.

Alas, my Linux system isn't yet compatible with the latest pilot-link version. But upon executing some June 20 2005 instructions, I successfully constructed a new Linux pilot.rules file, implanted it into the /etc/udev/rules.d directory and raised my existing kpilot software from the dead. Now, my Linux system automatically opens the required port to the Palm Zire 22 device, on startup.

Best of all, the alarm goes off, warning me of scheduled events.

Customer Review: Ahhhh, the last of the Palm devices I can use in my workplace?
Summary: 5 Stars

I happen to work in spaces that are governed by government security constraints--which practically mean that I cannot use a PDA that has Bluetooth, WiFi, or any wireless connectivity or phone capabilities. And the infrared ports need to be covered with attractive metal tape applied with loving care by an information systems security wonk... So, my choices were limited. This replaced an M500 that was getting a bit long in the tooth.

The product arrived ahead of the predicted arrival date, and in fine shape. The transition from the one device to the other was very easy, given the instructions for unloading from one to the other. I like the color screen and the navigation capabilities. Storage space is a nice step up for me. I have only two complaints. First, the system seems a bt slow in context switching--moving from one DB to another in severl of the applications seems rather slow, and switching between apps seems slow. Second, there's a freebie app that was included with the device called AddIt. Until a few weeks ago, AddIt was a multi-functional utility that both downloaded Reuters headlines and articles and also offered software packages on a try-to-buy basis. Well, Reuters has now stopped offering the news feed to AddIt, so now it's just an annoying salesperson from within my PDA.

Overall, a great upgrade for me!

Customer Review: PDA's come and go, But Palm PDA's Rock!
Summary: 5 Stars

I used to use Casio PDA, but didn't like changing the battery. So than I went for Palm, because Palm has been at PDA's for a long time. Palm is still making the best options avalible. The Palm OS is easy to use. Palm has 7 PDA's. Palm Z 22 has a lot of memory for the Palm OS and Storage. Palm rolls out Winners time and time again.

I like the Palm Z 22 for the high quality, the programs and the price. It looks like Apple's IPod only being a Palm, it does more. Inputing information is easy. Graf. 2 is great for shortcuts that I put in and write cursive l and go, and it spells Garbage out. Sinc is fun and important to put information on to the computer. So much software and three games that gets lots of use.

Z 22 comes with Contacts - Street address - Work phone - Home phone - Email address, Mobile Data Base, Date and time, Alarm, Memos, World Time, Calculator, Graffiti 2 writing system and Graffiti 2 drawing and pointing, Crazy Daisy game, Chess, Carbs diet, CheckSplit, 1st Aid, Knowledge, Solitaire, News, Shopping, Calendar, Expense, Note Pad, Splash Shopper, Tasks list, Photos, Find File, Quick Tour, Manual.

Z 22 Hardware: 200MHz ARM CPU, 32 MB total memory w/20 MB for the user, Palm OS Garnet 5.4, 160 X 160 color touchscreen display, Mini USB connector on device, Long life battery, 3.4 ounces.

Customer Review: Back to basics done right... Simple w/lots of power
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't believe in do it all products. Cumbersome and confusing-- too many options. My PC at home and laptop are used for data entry (Outlook- contacts, calendar, tasks-- plus work customer / sales info--- pricing / quotes.. etc). I wanted this unit to sync up with the work I do at home / in office so that if I'm away I can easily reference everything. This unit does that. 2 biggies:
1) It syncs very well with Outlook- for simplicity, stick with Outlook instead of trying Palm's proprietary software
2) It includes a program on CD called MobileDB-- basically- any customer data you have in a spreadsheet or database can be exported to this program and synced with your Palm. i.e. - if in Excel- highlight the table-- export to CSV or comma delimited file .. save the file somewhere you'll remember .. open MobilDB.. click import .. then save.. then click the icon that includes the db in your Palm sync. Next time you sync up your data appears on your Palm
Simple... useful... powerful.
I've imported about 5000 database records for reference (each database has about 5 fields per record) and still have about 65% of the memory left.
Best electronic unit I've purchased since my Garmin C300 car GPS.

Customer Review: I LOVE MY PALM Z22!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am generally as disorganized and befuddled a person as you've ever met, and I desperately needed something to help me make it to my appointments and not forget important tasks. I paid $350 for a different PDA a few years back, but it was bulky and complicated and used batteries, AND I never figured out how to sync it with Outlook. After the first set of batteries ran out I never got a new set, and after the device sat around for a couple of years I gave it to my son. I basically got the Z22 figuring that this one wouldn't work for me either, but I had to try something and at least it wouldn't have cost me much money. Four months later, and I couldn't live without it. I can't believe how easy my Z22 is to use. I don't know why some people hate Graffiti 2 so much -- my old handheld used Graffiti 1, and I never got the hang of it. Graffiti 2 seems much more intuitive to me, and as long as I print carefully, the Z22 reads my printing pretty accurately. I work in two different buildings for a large school district and I love being able to color-code tasks and appointments so I can tell at a glance where I have to be on what day. Since I got my new handheld, I literally haven't missed a single appointment.
