For the most part, I don't run with a HR monitor. I'm in good shape and i run a lot but when I first get started, I like to know how I'm doing.
So, here's the skinny. It actually talks to you! It tells you if your slacking off or if you should slow down. You can set your own heart rate limits but it really did a good job of figuring mine out automatically. When I'm training, I like to push myself pretty hard so I heard "You're going too fast. Please, slow down" For a half an hour. However, if you're not training for a marathon, or you're just trying to get those precious 30-60 mins of elevated heart rate (60-80%), this product works VERY well. The ONLY downside to this monitor is that you use earphones. This means that you won't be jamming to your MP3 player. They do make a model up from this with an FM radio and the voice just jumps in to tell you how you are doing. If you like to run on the treadmill and watch TV, this would work perfectly. Oh yeah, and aside from the fact that you can't listen to your MP3 player (unless you build a little mixer circuit) The headphones BLOW! Luckily, it uses a typical headphone jack and you can use whatever headphones (or mixer circuits) you like.
It runs on a CR2032 coin battery and seems to have decent battery life which is good because CR2032's aren't really that cheap.
All in all, if this one suits your needs, I would get one! Otherwise, you might consider the one with the radio built in. I like this product. Its nice for a little 3 mile jaunt but if you're training for speed (and going anaerobic) you will be listening to "You're above your zone, please, slow down."
Did I mention its a very pleasant woman's voice? Yep - Not computerized at all.
I like mine well enough to consider getting my dad one.
I'd recommend it.
