Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Opteka SB-1 Mini Universal Studio Soft Box Flash Diffuser

Customer Review: Opteka Universal Studio Soft Box Flash Diffuser
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an excellent product and the seller was very promt on sending the item to me

Customer Review: It's cheap. It works.
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this to have something that'd look somewhat decent while shooting a wedding. Didn't end up using it there, but I have used it in other contexts, so I can say that it certainly does what it's supposed to.

Diffusers aren't terribly hard to make if you're on a tight budget. Wax paper can work wonders, but it looks tacky. So, when you need something for presentation but don't want to shell out the cash for a flash-specific diffuser, this will fit the bill.

The first thing I noticed was the typo on the instructions - instead of "Friction" it says "Frivtion". No big deal, but obviously lends to the fact that it's cheap, and you're getting what you pay for.

This isn't going to hold up to abuse, and I'd honestly be a little worried if I were using this in anything like a sporting event or when shooting a band. In those contexts, I'd recommend something a little more solid. Still, it's cheap, easy to use, and works great in a pinch.

Recommend it? Yes, if you just want something that'll fit on a bunch of flashes. Don't buy it for a regular diffuser, though, as it may not last long.

Customer Review: Really helped soften the light
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the first diffuser that I've seen that folds flat, and that was really appealing since I don't have a lot of room in my current camera bag. Upon arrival I put it on the flash to test it out. It appeared to be working as it should, although test shots of rooms aren't quite as easy to tell as if it were photos of people. The following evening was when I got to use this on people. My family has taken to having me take the family portrait. It helped reduce the glare which is what it was supposed to do so I'm happy. Only thing I'm concerned with is durability, there are loops used to thread the velcro in which to hold the diffuser to the flash that look and feel fairly fragile. Since I don't do a whole lot of portrait work it's not something I'm worried about, but if you're going to be using the diffuser a lot and are concerned with durability I wouldn't recommend this set-up.

Customer Review: Cheap, works great
Summary: 4 Stars

For this price, you really can't go wrong. I use this with a Canon 430 EX II and it works great. Perfect for spreading out the flash a little when you're at a party or the like. Combined with bouncing off a wall or ceiling, and you can get some really nice lighting for on-camera flash.

However, I did find a couple of cons:
Setup time. It can take around a minute to thread the velcro strap through the four sides and attach it to the flash. The upside is that when dismantled it can lie very flat. I have it in my camera bag at all times, and often forget it's there due to its compact size.
Appearance. It makes an already large flash unit look even more conspicuous. Of course, this is mostly unavoidable - the bigger the better when it comes to a soft box.

Customer Review: Opteka Universal Studio Soft Box Flash Diffuser for Canon EOS
Summary: 4 Stars

Very nice for the price. It is easy to store and to set-up. I have not used it long enough to comment on the products overall durability, but I have had it for several weeks and it is holding up pretty well. The unit is moderating the light from my 430EX II flash and my pics. are looking better. I would say this item fits a niche, there are times when an omni-bounce unit would work and times when this soft-box unit are needed, so plan on obtaining both. Naturally, if you do a lot of studio work then you have other options, but for field work, assuming you have no portable light units, this Opteka unit is a cheap, helpful addition to your arsenal.
