I've been shooting without a grey card, but I have a wedding coming up and decided it's in my best interest to finally get around to seeing what all the hub bub is about.
I HIGHLY recommend any photographer who wants correct brightness and color balance when shooting anything white (Brides Dress...snow...animals...interior paint) uses a grey card.
I was amazed to see exactly how much the white color of my sons shirt changed in all photos taken in the same light with the use of a grey card.
This grey card comes with a neck strap so your not constantly digging around looking for them.
The directions that came with it should probably have been proof read before being packaged (lots of errors) and not so easy to understand.
I would say get this grey card set and then to learn to use it, find a good online tutorial.

The color values of Opteka Digital Grey Card set have been tested under varying light conditions and show a high degree of spectral neutrality. Using the industry-standard X-Rite spectrophotometer, LAB values of L* 63.8, a* -1.6, b* -0.4 are measured from the surface of the grey card under D50 standard illuminant. For optimum color correction, the black card achieves truly deep blacks (RGB 16,16,15). The grey card displays superior spectral neutrality with measured values of 162, 162, 160. The white card has a tested RGB value of (220, 224, 223). All three cards have excellent uniformity across a range of light sources.Lighting
